Syracuse and Utica once again show their commitment to a world without type 1 diabetes.
This fall the annual Central New York JDRF One Walks took place in both Utica (9/16) and Syracuse (9/23). Thanks to the dedicated walkers, volunteers, and sponsors both events produced incredible results that continue to inspire hope in our local T1D community.
JDRF One Walk Utica was led by long-time Walk Chair Diane Butler. In addition to Diane’s leadership, many teams and volunteers have been participating in this program since the first Utica One Walk. Music, raffles, cooperative art projects, and lots of smiles made for another fulfilling year of increased awareness and impactful fundraising at the Masonic Care Community.
In Syracuse, nearly 700 walkers returned to Long Branch Park on an absolutely beautiful day. The day began with an energizing performance by Downbeat Percussion drum ensemble and an inspiring reminder from One Walk Syracuse Chair, Kathy Selmser, and JDRF Board President, John Stepanian, of why we gather to walk each year—to make our loved ones affected by T1D feel as supported as possible. With 40 new teams participating in 2017, many newly diagnosed families were afforded the opportunity to meet and interact with our One Walk veterans. Spirits were high throughout the day as the kids enjoyed face painting and inflatable slides while many interested in taking their knowledge and involvement a step further visited the T1D Community Resources Village or the JDRF Advocacy area. Furthermore, high-achieving walkers gave us much to celebrate that day, as a record 19 individuals reached “V1P” status meaning they raised $1,000 or more.
Though many walk teams continue to engage their donors in post-walk fundraising, such as requesting employer matching gifts, efforts to build on the upward momentum both of the local One Walks created are already underway. Volunteers and committed walk teams are beginning to meet regularly with JDRF staff to look ahead to further improving the events in Syracuse and Utica for 2018.
