JDRF Eastern PA hosted the 2018 One Promise Gala, chaired by the fabulous Lisi Lerch, this past Saturday at Loews Philadelphia Hotel. Lerch’s passion for her family and JDRF shown as she worked with a dedicated committee of JDRF volunteers who strove to make this upcoming Gala a huge success – and a “Celebration of Hope”! Among our enthusiastic band of Gala volunteers were 13 inspiring Youth Ambassadors, ages of 7 to 17, who were vital to the success of this event.
Youth Ambassadors – all of whom have type 1 diabetes (T1D) – play a significant role in the evening’s festivities, welcoming guests and assisting with special portions of the Ballroom programing. Each Ambassador’s presence is an opportunity to raise awareness about T1D and express our immeasurable gratitude for the generosity of our Gala patrons who help JDRF fund research toward a cure.
In light of the evening’s theme, “A Celebration of Hope,” we asked all of our 2018 Youth Ambassadors what they hope for. Read below to find out what a wishful future looks like to children with T1D in our community:
“I hope for continued advancements in technology as well as united research for a cure.” – Jon Berman
“I hope for a Cure so that I can have a worry-free day!” – Quinn Bookbinder
“I hope for a cure, lots of good times, laughter and friends, success, and freedom of choice.” – Vinnie Campo
“I hope one day there will be a cure for type 1 diabetes. In the meantime, I hope all diabetics can have access to improvements such as a closed-loop system. I also hope that all diabetics will live a healthy and full life. Besides my diabetes-related hopes, I hope I will see an end to school shootings in my lifetime, as well as seeing the end of the conflict in Syria. We as a world have a long way to go, but I hope we will all strive towards completing the UN’s Global Goals.” – Mackenzie Cohn
“In the future, I hope for many things. I hope to attend Villanova University and play professional soccer. Most of all, I would really like a cure for type 1 diabetes, so I would not have to prick my finger or wear an insulin pump all the time. A cure would really mean a lot to me and to all those with type 1.” – Ethan Howard
“I hope that everyone can have the best technology until we find a cure.” – Libby Lerch
“I hope to attend Thomas Jefferson University and become a Physician Assistant specializing in Pediatric Endocrinology, preferably at CHOP.” – Madigan McGrath
“I hope that sometime soon I don’t have to check my blood sugar anymore.” – Nathan Reilly
“Throughout my years as a diabetic, I’ve always have looked back and said how did I live like that, from shots to insulin pump to continuous glucose monitor to the closed-loop system. My hope is that these realizations continue to happen more and more frequently for diabetics, until the point that it ceases, and we all can be baffled by how anyone could ever have lived as a diabetic.” – Scott Schwartz
“Mom, I think I have the best answer. I hope for a cure for diabetes. Then I won’t have to change my pump or take insulin when I eat!” – Ava Stankavage
“I hope for JDRF to continue to make strides to make living with type 1 easier. And also… a cure.” – Abby Steinburg
“I hope that one day we will have a world without diabetes and never see another kid get diabetes again.” – Jade West
“I hope for a cure so that no little kids have to deal with this [disease] ever again.” – Evan Wickersham
