Gear up for Summer Fun with T1D

in

Along with warmer temperatures and outdoor adventures, summer can bring new challenges when it comes to diabetes management. Planning ahead can help you spend less time on diabetes, and more time having fun.

  • Beat the heat! Hot weather can wreak havoc on blood sugar levels, especially if physical activity is involved. Keep a close eye on blood sugar trends as the weather heats up to help determine how best to address any changes ā€“ from basal rate reductions to additional snacks. Consult your doctor if unsure how best to proceed.
  • Stay hydrated! Pack extra water bottles if outdoor activities are on your summer agenda to avoid the risk of dehydration and the toll it can take on blood sugar.
  • Protect your supplies. Insulin can become ineffective if exposed to extreme heat for too long, and insulin pumps can malfunction if they overheat. If your supplies will be outside on a hot day, consider an insulated storage bag or cooler to protect them.
  • Stick to a routine. Later bedtimes, different mealtimes, more exerciseā€¦everything is different in the summer! Lack of school schedule and structure can dramatically alter a childā€™s blood sugar levels. It can help to implement and stick with new routines where possible.
  • Identify yourself. If your child will be heading to camps or new environments this summer, make sure they wear a medical ID bracelet so everyone is aware they have T1D.
  • Plan to get wet! Water can take a toll on adhesives for pumps and CGMs. If you are headed to the pool or beach, consider buying adhesive patches to help secure your devices for longer wear.
  • Stock up on snacks! Summer can be unpredictable. Have plenty of snacks on hand to get you through any adventure.
