Local Kids on the Forefront of Diabetes Research!
Over 100 type 1 diabetics from eastern Iowa recently completed a JDRF funded research study at the University of Iowa. The JDRF is the world's largest charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research and this study was part of a $6 million research initiative. Dr. Eva Tsalikian led the research team which included Dr. Michael Tansey, both pediatric endocronologists with the University of Iowa.
The clinical trial gave many local patients the opportunity to use a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) device to help manage their blood sugar levels. CGM's read glucose levels on a minute-by-minute basis using a small sensor that is inserted under the skin and continuously transmits data to a hand-held device. These devices not only provide actual glucose readings, but also tell a patient whether their glucose level is trending upwards or downward.
This research is part of the JDRF Artificial Pancreas Project, which aims to speed and optimize the development of a closed-loop system by integrating a real-time glucose sensor and an insulin delivery system.
