JDRF Charlotte Chapter

2009 JDRF Children's Congress

President Barack Obama met with more than 150 kids and teenagers with type 1 diabetes on Tuesday - a high point of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Children's Congress, the largest grassroots event held in support of research for type 1 diabetes.  From June 22-24, children and teenagers representing all 50 states took part in Children's Congress, which included the White House visit with the President, a Town Hall panel of athletes and celebrities impacted by diabetes, individual visits for each kid delegate with their senators and representatives, and a Senate hearing at which Nick Jonas, Mary Tyler Moore, Sugar Ray Leonard and kids - all touched by type 1 diabetes - testified on the need for funding for type 1 diabetes research.

I Can't Cook, But I Know Someone Who Can

Last September, Stacey Simms came out with her new book, "I Can't Cook, but I know Someone Who Can."  This fun Charlotte cookbook, with some of the best chefs in town contributing recipes includes Stacey sharing her own kitchen disaster stories.  The point of the project was to raise money and awareness for JDRF.

At our Harris Teeter Golf Classic on June 8th, Stacey made her first donation from book sales in the amount of $10,000!!!

Stacey says she hopes to make another donation this fall...so book sales continue!  This is a great gift for weddings, showers, and graduations.  In addition to bookstores and Amazon, you can buy it at WBT.com-be sure to use the promotion code "JDRF' and save $10.  Thank you to Stacey for donating the proceeds from the book and to everyone who purchased (and who will purchase) the cookbook.  Stacey is also available to sell cookbooks or to speak at community events.

To learn more, or to purchase a cookbook, go to http://www.staceysimms.com/.

Stacey also writes a monthly blog, often including topics about dealing with her son's diabetes.  To read Stacey's blog, go to blog.wbt.com/stacey.

Before the DMV will authorize the first plate to be produced, 300 applications with payment must be received.  North Carolina has received 166 applications so far.  All applications should be sent to JDRF's Triangle/Eastern NC Chapter. The license plate will cost $20 for a regular JDRF plate or $50 for a personalized JDRF plate. This fee is in addition to the annual vehicle license plate fee.
