Continuous Glucose Monitors: Even More of a Good Thing
For a while now, JDRF has been conducting clinical trials on the effectiveness of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) for people with type 1 diabetes. Last year, they issued their first two reports on their findings, showing that CGMs can improve control even for people who already have A1c's below 7%. Now JDRF has released their third and fourth reports, and they even more strongly support the use of CGMs. According to their studies, which were recently published online by the journal Diabetes Care, the regular use of a CGM is a more important contributor to good control of blood sugar than age or background.  Read more...

Health Plans Expand CGM Coverage Due to JDRF Trial
Four of the nation's five largest health plans -- Aetna, CIGNA, United, and Wellpoint -- are now providing broad coverage for continuous glucose monitors (CGM) based on the results of the JDRF funded trial, as are numerous influential regional plans. For more, see this page.

Good News: United Issues New CGM Coverage Policy
United, which serves 70 million Americans, has just issued a great new policy which provides long-term coverage for continuous glucose monitoring for people with type 1 diabetes who are following a physician ordered treatment plan and either have been unable to achieve optimum glycemic control or have experienced hypoglycemia unawareness. In addition to United, Aetna and Kaiser Permanente recently expanded their CGM policies.  For more information about these and other policies, click here.
