JDRF Supporter Named Australian of the Year
New York, NY, February 2, 2006 — JDRF congratulates Professor Ian Frazer on being selected 2006 Australian of the Year, honoring his contributions to research and work in the development of the human papillomavirus vaccine for cervical cancer. This most prestigious award is presented to inspirational role models who demonstrate excellence in their field and have made a significant contribution to the Australian community and nation.
A key supporter of JDRF, Dr. Frazer is Chair of the Executive Board for the Islet Transplantation Program, which is funded by a $30 million grant to JDRF Australia from the Australian Government. The program aims to take islet transplantation from an experimental procedure to a clinical option for Australians with type 1 diabetes.
Dr. Frazer also chairs the joint National Health and Medical Research Council/JDRF Grant Review Panel in Australia. He advises several not-for-profit foundations and is the Director of the Centre for Immunology and Cancer Research, a research institute of the University of Queensland at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane.
