Janie is a volunteer with us here at JDRF. Because of her hard work and dedication, she has been awarded the Ingram Scholarship – a full ride scholarship to Vanderbilt!
Recently, we asked her to share a bit of her story with JDRF. Here’s what she said:
“I started my very own walk team a couple of years ago. Although hesitant at first, I jumped in wholeheartedly, wanting to support my sister Ella. The next couple of months were filled with writing emails, letters, and practically begging everyone I knew to support a cause dear to my heart. Somehow I managed to raise almost 4 times my initial goal. I still remember the first walk and feeling so proud that I was able to do something to help Ella. JDRF helped me to realize the power within myself, and the power of a community that is willing to help. I realized for the first time that I could truly make a difference in someone’s life and in the world. It gave me confidence in my abilities and hope for the future.
After that first walk I wanted to do more. After a few conversations and a lot of thought, I decided to begin the Session for Siblings at Type One Nation. I began that sibling session to help other teenagers feel less alone, but in the end they made me feel less lonely. It made me realize how many families are just like mine and how many people have the same daily struggles and issues.
All in all, JDRF has allowed me to discover strength and confidence within myself and realize the full potential of a group of people passionate about a cause. At the beginning of high school I never would have guessed that I could accomplish so much, but JDRF made it possible. It made me realize that I am capable of any goal I set my mind to. It also made me appreciate the strong community that is JDRF. JDRF creates a space for people with T1D, and the people close to them, to get involved, help others, and receive the support they need. JDRF has taught me so much about myself and others, and I am so thankful for everything it did to help me and everything it is doing to help others.”
We are so proud of Janie and all our volunteers! JDRF is nothing without our volunteers!
