Join us for the Ride to Cure Diabetes

in ,

The JDRF Southern Nevada Chapter Ride team is growing quickly and looking for new riders to join for one of the multiple destination rides.

In 2014, Jim Mason, our current President of the chapter Board of Directors, was the single participant from our chapter participating in the Ride to Cure Diabetes in Nashville, Tennessee. Jim won an award for being one of the top fundraisers for that ride, and fought unseasonably cold temperatures to finish his 100 mile ride.

The next year he recruited a few of his family members and a friend and the chapter quickly grew from one rider to five participants in two different rides.

The Southern Nevada Chapter experienced an exciting addition in 2016, when Colleen Corey joined the team as a ride coach. Five participants, including a youth rider and two riders with type 1 diabetes, joined the team for the ride in Tucson, Arizona. In addition, three members of the Mason family returned for the ride in Amelia Island, Florida.

In two years, the chapter team grew from one rider in one location to eight riders in two different locations.

Last year, the Southern Nevada Chapter had the biggest ride team for the local chapter in the 20 year history of the ride program. Thirteen riders trained and participated in JDRF’s first ride in Loveland, Colorado at the end of August. Additionally, one of our riders participated in his second ride of the season by riding 100 miles in Tucson, Arizona in November.

The ride team included two coaches, three riders with type 1 diabetes, three riders under 18 years old, three parents of kids with type 1 diabetes, two husband/wife pairs riding together, two diabetes medical professionals, and several people with no direct connection to T1D.

Participants rode distances from around 40 miles to over 100 miles and raised over $63,000 for type 1 diabetes research!

Registration for the 2018 ride season begins at 9:00 AM PST on January 17th. The Southern Nevada Chapter team is aiming to break records for number of riders on our team and amount of money raised for research!
