Juggling T1D & The Holiday Season

Managing T1D can be challenging any time of year, but especially during the Holiday Season. The amount of parties and family gatherings we are attending is heightened during the Holidays which can create extra excitement, we are traveling, more physical activity, richer than normal foods, and different sleep patterns can all throw off your child’s every day routine.  Below is a list of tips to help navigate through the most wonderful time of the year.

Possible Hurdles:

  • Unpredictable meal or bedtimes.
  • Excitement!
  • The cold weather
  • Carb-heavy or new foods

Tricks to Help:

  • Try to maintain as normal a schedule as possible. Sleep can really affect blood glucose levels.
  • Perform more blood glucose checks than normal. Excitement and adrenaline can make glucose levels do crazy things!
