JDRF Kids Walk: Intern and Event Chair Needed

The JDRF NYC Chapter is currently looking to fill two positions related to our Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes Program, which is an educational, in-school fundraising program with two goals: 1) to educate students about type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and 2) to provide them with an opportunity to make a difference by raising money for type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.

Our program helps to foster an environment of positive character building and community service. Students are recognized with a banner and awards. Your school can earn funds to use for equipment, field trips, books, or whatever your school needs!

Position #1: JDRF Kids Walk Intern

Job Description

The JDRF Kids Walk Program Intern serves as an important part of the program assisting in coordinating the Kids Walk Program in local elementary and middle schools and implementing the program from start to finish. This includes delivering materials to the schools, performing an assembly, attending a Kids Walk on the school grounds, as well as collecting and processing fundraising envelopes. These responsibilities will need to be fulfilled between Monday through Friday. Interns will be trained on how to perform an Assembly.

Key Responsibilities

Helps coordinate the Kids Walk Program Schedule. Delivers materials to schools. Performs an assembly or assemblies at the school with another JDRF representative. Attends a Kids Walk on school grounds. Helps collect and process fundraising envelopes. Enters data in regards to incentive prizes into a school spreadsheet. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of computer and data entry.
  • Pleasant manner, dependable, people- oriented, comfortable with public speaking, child friendly.
  • Connection to type 1 diabetes preferred, but not required.

Training for this position will be provided. In addition, development staff will be available for questions and assistance.

Location

This intern works both in the office of the JDRF and on the road visiting various elementary and middle schools.

Time Commitment

Predetermined number of hours with a varied schedule given in advance. Must be available during school hours at least two days a week.

Business Casual. JDRF Walk T-Shirts provided for Assemblies and Walks.

Reimbursement Opportunities

Although this is an unpaid internship, interns may be reimbursed for their mileage to and from the schools where they are performing an Assembly or assisting with a Kids Walk.

Position #2: JDRF Kids Walk Event Chair

Job Description

The Kids Walk Chair serves as the lead volunteer for the Kids Walk to CureĀ Diabetes. He or she leads the various volunteer efforts for the Chapterā€™s KidsĀ Walk program that includes school kick-off presentations, walks and logistics. InĀ this leadership position, the Kids Walk Chair will partner with JDRF staff to helpĀ reach the organizationā€™s fundraising goals and gain needed support and
commitments from volunteers.

Key Responsibilites

  • Volunteer lead for Kids Walk ā€“ oversees volunteer committee focused on school recruitment, fundraising, and administrative tasks.
  • Develops Kids Walk plans and sets priorities in conjunction with development staff.
  • Works in partnership with staff to fill various volunteer roles and ensure Kids Walk goals are being met.
  • Establishes Kids Walk Committee meeting schedule and facilitates monthly meetings.
  • Communicates regularly with Kids Walk volunteers and development staff about event progress.
  • Interacts frequently with Walk Committee and Outreach volunteers to identify potentialĀ new schools for hosting a Kids Walk program.
  • Holds volunteers accountable to their assigned tasks, encourages volunteers/Board members to recruit their childrenā€™s schools to participate in a Kids Walk and/or facilitate connections to school administrators.
  • Reports to the Chapter Board of Directors on the progress of the Kids Walk program
  • Attend and speak at various events where there is an opportunity to promote the Kids Walk program. This may include JDRF events such as Outreach events, the Family Team Rally, WalK Kickoff, or other local events such as school RN meetings, principal meetings, or PE teacher in-services.
  • Lead recruitment efforts for next yearā€™s Kids Walk Chair.

TimeĀ Commitment

Minimum one-year commitment. Approx 8 ā€“ 16 Hours/month. The Kids Walk program
is a year-round effort. Event Chair must shedule an initial planning meeting with staff, attend monthly Kids Walk Committee meetings, and attend various events to promote program.

Qualifications

ā€¢ Previous Kids Walk experience
ā€¢ Understanding of JDRF mission; knowledge of T1D and its impact on families and communities
ā€¢ Candidates must possess strong communication, collaboration and leadership skills.

Additionally, one-on-one training sessions with Development Staff; Kids Walk DVDā€™s and sample presentations, VolunteerĀ Guide, marketing booklet, national training opportunities will all be provided to the Kids Walk Event Chair.
