A group dedicated to connecting the adolescent (ages 12 to 18) type 1 diabetes (T1D) community.
The first meeting was held in January 2017 and we welcomed over 18 teens from the Omaha/Council Bluffs metro areas. The group brainstormed a variety of educational, fun and inspiring speakers and activities to participate in – each month providing something different. Meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of each month, special thanks to Children’s Hospital & Medical Center for providing the meeting space. Location is subject to change—visit jdrf.org/Omaha for up-to-date information.
A support system is important for everyone, especially teenagers as they navigate these years while managing their diabetes care. We look forward to providing them the space to build friendships, share ideas and experiences, and education for years to come!
If you or someone you know is between ages 12 to 18 and living with T1D please join us at this monthly opportunity to meet others also living with T1D.

“Empower1 has been an amazing way for me to meet more diabetics in my community. Yes I go to Camp Floyd Rodgers most summers, but that is open to anyone in the Nebraska area. I also get to see the people who go to camp through Empower1, people who I normally see only one week out of the year.
Empower1 has provided a environment were I can feel normal and I don’t have to hide my diabetes. I have also been able to provide advice for those more recently diagnosed and receive advice from those who have been diagnosed longer than me.
Before Empower1 there wasn’t really a type one diabetes support group in town. At one point we went to a group in Lincoln Nebraska for advice, we eventually started our own that didn’t last very long. But Empower1 is really the first actual support group anchored towards kids or teens in Omaha Nebraska.
I guess Empower1 has been more helpful than I thought. It may just be a group for type one diabetic teens to get together but we don’t talk about our diabetes very much, rather we actually feel more free to be average teenagers. I have got a strong support system out of this group, and I hope to enjoy Empower1 as much as I can.”
Erin, age 13
“I like to go to Empower1 group for the fun monthly activity for teenagers with type 1 diabetes. I like meeting other people with T1D because I can learn from them.”
Henry, age 12
“Empower1 is a great opportunity to talk with other teens about our type 1 diabetes experiences, but more importantly to have some fun together. I like that the teens get to drive the activities.”
