The San Diego Chapter of JDRF announced today that former light middleweight boxing champion and Breitbard Hall of Fame inductee, Paul Vaden, has been named the Celebrity Spokesperson for this year’s JDRF One Walk. Mr. Vaden is a San Diego native and became the IBF World Boxing Champion in 1995. Known as “The Ultimate”, he has been active in raising critical funds for type 1 diabetes (T1D) research through his support of both the JDRF Walk and The Promise Ball. A supporter of many charitable organizations in San Diego, Mr. Vaden has been a member of the JDRF Board of Directors since 2014.
The JDRF One Walk will be held at Balboa Park on November 11th. More than 4,000 walkers representing local companies, families, schools, and other organizations are expected to participate. The goal for the One Walk is to raise over $700,000 for research to better treat, prevent and ultimately cure T1D.
“I’m always proud to integrate my talents and passion with the JDRF Family. I remain willing and able to fulfill my duties as Celebrity Spokesperson and all that it entails. Let’s do this!” exclaimed Vaden.
He currently works with Fortune 500 companies to motivate employees to set goals and achieve success in the workplace and in life. In addition, his documentary “Vaden Versus” recently won the Nevada International Film Festival Platinum Reel Award. The film documents his struggles and eventual return to championship form after his 1999 title fight in which his opponent Stephan Johnson was knocked unconscious and died 15 days later.
Paul Vaden has been a tremendous leader in the fight to cure T1D.” said Board President Andy Galewski “As the One Walk Celebrity Spokesperson and a member of the Board of Directors, he not only motivates but he leads by example. His Answer the Bell walk team is always one of our most successful walk teams in support of our Mission to Create a World Without T1D. And his leadership does not stop with the Walk or with San Diego.” added Galewski. “Paul was gracious and dedicated enough to Answer the Bell when the New Mexico Chapter of JDRF asked him to speak at their Gala. He did not think twice about heading out to Albuquerque to once again do his part in Creating a World Without T1D.”
T1D is an autoimmune disease that is life threatening and each day 1.5 million children and adults must “Answer the Bell” by regularly testing their blood glucose levels through finger sticks, counting every carbohydrate that they eat to calculate the correct amount of insulin and then injecting themselves with insulin three to five times a day. And even with this intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its potential and devastating complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke and amputation.
“The Fight Plan : more donations, more funds generates more research to help knockout T1D. I’m eager to uphold my end of the deal.” said Vaden. “We are thrilled to have Paul Vaden as our Celebrity Spokesperson and bring his “Answer the Bell” philosophy to the JDRF One Walk.” said Sean McParland, JDRF Executive Director.
