Greensboro, North Carolina, February 12, 2018 – For the first time ever, JDRF’s Piedmont Triad Chapter will feature an Ultimate Kitchen Makeover—with an estimated value of $25,000—as part of the Live Auction at its 2018 Hope Gala at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro on Saturday, February 24.

Hope Gala Auction Chair Debra Cowan came up with the idea of a kitchen makeover as she developed a wish list of must-have Live Auction items. She immediately enlisted the support of longtime JDRF volunteers Susan Mowery, Vice President of Building Dimensions, and Alejandra Thompson, Founder and Creative Director of Thompson Traders, who is serving as 2018 Gala Chair along with her husband, Cliff. Debra, Susan, and Alejandra all have daughters with type 1 diabetes (T1D). They are all passionate about achieving JDRF’s vision of “a world without T1D,” and they want to help make that vision a reality by raising as much money as possible for T1D research through the 2018 Hope Gala.

The Kitchen Makeover includes:

  • Bosch appliances (stainless steel range, dishwasher, and microwave), provided by Larry & Alley Furniture and Appliances
  • Thompson Traders copper or hand-hammered stainless steel sink and faucet
  • Thompson Traders copper or polished nickel range hood
  • Two hundred square feet of Daltile tile (for backsplash and/or flooring)
  • Stone Basyx granite countertops (measured, templated, and installed by Ivey Lane)
  • Cabinets and hardware, custom-fabricated by Kitchen Cabinet Distributors
  • Sherwin Williams paint
  • Design consultation services, provided by Vivid Interiors

The Kitchen Makeover is limited to remodeling projects only—no new construction. Upgrades are available at the winning bidder’s expense. The winning bidder must arrange and pay for a licensed and insured general contractor. Except where noted, the Makeover excludes demolition, labor, installation, and delivery costs. Individual donor restrictions may apply.

Anyone wishing to bid on the Ultimate Kitchen Makeover must attend the JDRF Hope Gala on February 24. There will be no bidding by phone or online.

About Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that impacts millions of people around the world. The disease occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, a hormone essential to turning food into energy. Without insulin, glucose from food stays in the blood, where it can cause serious damage to all of the body’s organ systems. It requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on injected insulin. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure.

About JDRF: JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research, and has committed over $2.25 billion to research since its founding in 1970. JDRF and its supporters share the vision of “a world without type 1 diabetes,” and work every day to support the organization’s mission of “accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat type 1 diabetes and its complications.” JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners and is the only organization with the scientific resources, regulatory influence, and a working plan to bring life-changing therapies from the lab to the community. As the largest charitable supporter of T1D research, JDRF awarded 150 new research grants in fiscal year 2017 and is currently funding research in 21 countries—including 70 active clinical trials. jdrf.org
