A Cause To Celebrate

L’AMY America Makes Generous Donation to JDRF for Type 1 Diabetes Research

Wilton, CT, January 30, 2017 – On January 30, Stephen Rappoport, President L’Amy America, presented a donation check to the Fairfield/Westchester/Hudson Valley Chapter of JDRF. JDRF is the leading organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research to transform the lives of people with the disease – to make day-to-day life with T1D easier, safer and healthier and ultimately find a cure.

The generous donation was the result of proceeds from the sale of L’AMY America’s tween eyewear in a program called “Destination, Jr.” The program ran from May 15 to December 31, 2016, and encouraged participating optical accounts to make a purchase of Niki Nicole Miller, Sperry Kids or Champion Tween eyewear.  For every style sold through and re-ordered, L’AMY America agreed to donate a percentage of the wholesale price to JDRF.lamy

L’AMY America chose JDRF as the charitable organization to receive this donation as a result of a company employee whose 7-year old granddaughter is living with T1D. Twenty-one thousand dollars can go a long way to help them accomplish their goals,” said Mr. Rappoport.  “We know that every dollar will be spent to help make progress towards a better life or even a cure for those living with type 1 diabetes.”

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone people need to get energy from food.  T1D strikes both children and adults and has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle.  There is currently nothing you can do to prevent it.  People with T1D must regularly monitor their blood sugar level, inject or continually infuse insulin through a pump, and carefully balance their insulin doses with eating and daily activities throughout the day and night.  However, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, and even with intensive disease management, people with T1D are at risk for devastating complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, and amputation.  JDRF is the leading organization funding research to transform the lives of people with type 1 diabetes – to make day-to-day life with T1D easier, safer and healthier and ultimately find a cure.   JDRF’s goal is to turn Type One into Type None.

“JDRF is thrilled to partner with L’AMY America this year and we are grateful for the support of their organization,” said Margie Ostrower, Executive Director of the Fairfield/Westchester/Hudson Valley Chapter of JDRF.  “Having the support of local businesses in our community helps JDRF to achieve a world without T1D.”
