The JDRF Students with Diabetes Internship Program is an immersive, competitive program designed to develop and train undergraduate and graduate students living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) to become leaders in the diabetes community.

The Opportunity:

The JDRF Students with Diabetes Internship Program matches prospective interns with 8-week internship opportunities in a diabetes-related field across the country. Interns will be placed at companies – non-profit organizations, medical technology companies, etc. – that work in the T1D space.

Prior to the internship, JDRF will train interns in the JDRF Leadership Training Academy. During this experience, interns will receive basic training in professional behavior, communication skills, advocacy and grassroots organization and development.

Internship opportunities exist at various companies and organizations across the country in the following sectors of the diabetes community:

  1. Advocacy
  2. Business Operations & Management
  3. Communications / Marketing
  4. Non-Profit Management
  5. Research / Science
  6. Technology

Timeline:

Fall 2018 – Application process opens
January 2019 – Application deadline, intern finalists notified
Summer 2019 – Internships take place

Requirements for Participation:

  • Participants must be Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. degree-seeking students and provide a transcript or online grade report verifying enrollment. Participants must be or have been enrolled in academic studies in the calendar year of the internship.
  • Participants must have lived with T1D for at least 1 year and provide a letter of verification of T1D from a health professional.
  • Participants must submit the internship application, including a current resume.
  • Participants must provide a letter of recommendation from a professor or employer.

Interns will be chosen based on quality of application and resume, demonstrated desire to work in the T1D community, communication and writing skills, academic standing, and professionalism.

Throughout the internship, interns are expected to maintain professional behavior at all times. Interns will also be expected to participate in the JDRF Leadership Academy before internship placements begin.

While a traditional stipend of approximately $2,500 for the summer will be provided, all interns should be prepared and willing to cover the cost of travel, housing, food and other personal expenses during the internship, and have reliable transportation throughout the internship. Internships are located across the country; interns should be prepared to travel domestically to the internship opportunity at which they are placed (as internships are selected based on field and interest rather than geography). At the conclusion of the internship, a 1-2 page report will be due (details provided upon acceptance into the Internship program).
