HARRISBURG, PA, November, 3rd, 2019 — More than 1,000 people gathered at City Island to participate in the JDRF Community One Walk in Harrisburg on Sunday, November 3rd. The annual Walk, organized by JDRF volunteers, raised more than $263,000 to fund critically-needed type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.

“We are grateful for the incredible support of community and business leaders here in Harrisburg,” said Natasha Lewis, Executive Director of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter. “The dollars raised at this year’s event will lead to better lives for the 1.25 million Americans with type 1 diabetes, and will help us realize our vision of a world without T1D.”

The energetic and enthusiastic walkers witnessed a stunning view of downtown Harrisburg as they walked across the bridge at City Island , starting at 2pm and ending around 4pm. There, they were met by JDRF volunteers and staff when they crossed the finish line.

The JDRF Community One Walk brings together people who share JDRF’s mission to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. Although there has been considerable progress, JDRF will continue to drive scientific advances, delivering new treatments and therapies that make day-to-day life with T1D easier, safer and healthier until there is a cure.

JDRF gratefully acknowledges its local corporate partners: Fry Communications and Graham Packaging.

“Thank you to our participants, the city of Harrisburg, and our dedicated volunteers for making this year’s JDRF Community Walk such a success and for showing your support for the families and individuals in Central PA who are affected by T1D,” said Angie Lankford, JDRF Central PA’s Development Manager. “Together, we will turn type one into type none.”

About T1D
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, called beta cells. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved. Its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D, and—at present—nothing you can do to get rid of it.
