The Summit brings together T1D Experts to share their knowledge on the latest treatments, breakthroughs in research, and the psycho-social aspects of living (and thriving!) with T1D. Our event will feature a research update, a keynote address, and multiple breakout sessions/workshops.

PARENT/ADULT BREAKOUT SESSIONS

Women & T1DĀ (Breakout #1)

Dr. Rashim Gupta

This workshopĀ will offer an opportunity to explore issue that surround be a women living with T1D.Ā  We will discuss the topics of: cycles, pregnancy, menopause, and how to balance family, health and work.

T1D 101 (Breakout #1)

Dr. Bryce Nelson

This session is designed for newly diagnosed T1Ds and their loved ones. This session will cover the basics of type 1 diabetes and their treatment including: carb counting, bolusing, carb ratios and the difference between long and short acting insulins.

T1D Beyond the Basics (Breakout #1)

Dr. Elaine Apperson

Do you ever wonder why pizza is so hard to carb count for? How do you know when it’s time to change a basal rate or a carb ratio? Why do growth hormones make some insulin resistant? This class covers all those beyond basic T1D issues.Ā  If you feel comfortable with the basics but want to learn more, this is the session for you!

T1D & Mental Health (Breakout #2)

Panel Discussion led by William Mulkey, MA, LCPS

Type 1 diabetes not only affects your physical well-being, but it can also impact your emotional health. This panel discussion will explore the stigma of mental health, and how to cope and not feel alone while living with T1D. The panel will include perspectives fromĀ  a mental healthcare professional, a T1D mother of 2, a mother of a T1D child, and an adult T1D.

Managing T1D in School & Sports (Breakout #2)

Did you know that every child living with T1D is protected at school by federal and state laws?Ā  This session will help you learn about your legal rights in school, 504 plans, accommodations options and how to balance education and sports involvement at school.

Raising a Teen with Type 1 (Breakout #2)

Lori Wise

Is your child between the ages of 12 and 20? Do you wonder how your T1D child will transition to college? How will you keep them safe when they learn to drive? Led by a teen expert, this session with Lori Wise is the workshop for you!Ā  She will help you navigate the tricky waters of teens and T1D.

Are You Prepared for the Financial Future? (Breakout #2)

Parent Financial

Parent Financial is a financial planning firm that specializes in working with parents and families. From college planning and insurance to investments and estate planning they are actively seeking to support families and individuals living with Type 1 diabetes as they plan for the future. This class is designed to help you better understand the important aspects of your financial life and why having a clear plan is so important. They will cover topics ranging from insurance to investments and how best to manage these concerns while handling an expensive condition like T1D.

T1D: The 3rd Wheel in Our Relationship (Breakout #3)

Do you love a T1D, but sometime don’t get it? This session is designed to hear from others who love a T1D and how they cope with the high and lows of their relationship. The Panel discussion will include a counselor, wife of a T1D, Husband of a T1D, and best friend of a T1D.

Tired of Fighting T1D? (Breakout #3)

Join us to learn tips, tricks and insights on the art of internal and external communication, and how it can affect behaviors and beliefs about T1D and your on-going management of it. Learn the power of language: how the words we use can influence the habits we desire. Bringing your Parts Together:Ā  how we can achieve more harmony within ourselves (and our families) when we identify behaviors that conflict. Getting into the Zone: how you can ease anxietyĀ using self-hypnosis techniques that will make shots, site changes and living with T1D less stressful.
Navigating Health Insurance (Breakout #3)

Navigating Health Insurance (Breakout #3)

Do you know the difference between pharmacy benefits and DME? Do you who your payor is? What role does your company have in the medications that are covered by your insurance plan? If you don’t, this is the session for you! You will learn the proper terminology to use as you navigate the tedious process of insurance coverage for your T1D.

T1D Hot Topics (Breakout #4)

This session is designed to offer adults and parents the opportunity to meet experts in many fields including: acupuncture, exercise, nutrition, stress managementĀ & JDRF Ride.

Research Beyond the AP System (Breakout #4)

Brad Schur

This mission session will update you on all the T1D advancements that JDRF is funding in the field outside of the AP system including: encapsulation, prevention, and CURE!

And Another Thing…Managing T1D for Parents (Breakout #4)

Jennifer Elkins

This session is designed to help parents and caregivers of children with type 1 diabetes cope with the overwhelming aspects of daily management of T1D. Acknowledgment will be made of the similarities in symptoms a parent with a newly diagnosed child with T1D has, in comparison to those of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).Ā  Other topics will include Compassion Fatigue in caregivers, grief, and ways to manage these stressors.

How Can I Take Action? (Breakout #4)

Cindy Brothers & Jennie Costner

Do you want to change the way T1Ds live? Do you want to impact your T1D community? Then you should join us for an inspiration session on how to make the changes you want to see on both a localĀ and on a national level. Hear from two amazing mothers that are blazing the trail and taking action to benefit all T1Ds!

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMMING

Children’s breakout sessions will be both educational and FUN! Ā Groups will beĀ organized by grade level: under K, K-2, 3-5, and 6-9.

Babysitting will be provided all day for children under 5.

Children grades K-5Ā will create crafts, play games that allow them to practice carb counting, and even participate in a pod design contest to win a 4 pack of passes to Great Wolf Lodge.

Teens grades 6-9 will use their tech savvy skills to create their own public service video announcement so they can use their voice to spread awareness to all of us!

Siblings will have special programming throughout the day!
