Flight for A Cure Honoring Fred Buttrell

On Saturday, April 25, 2020, JDRF Greater Dallas will host the annual Dream Gala at the Omni Dallas Hotel and will commemorate its milestone 50th Anniversary of providing life-changing type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and progress. This years Dream Gala will honor Fred Buttrell, retired CEO of Air Medical Group Holdings, and current Executive Advisor of Blue Sea Capital.

In 1993, Fred had just returned from his second tour in the Persian Gulf and was serving as a flight instructor for the F-15E Strike Eagle. After exhibiting the unusual symptoms of extreme thirst, urination and weight loss, he visited the squadron flight doctor for tests. While in the middle of an engagement with the Navy over Yuma AZ flight range, the announcement came over dispatch, “Eagle flight return to base and get Buttrell on the ground!”. The results were in and Fred was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. That was his last flight and he was devastated. Despite the setback, Fred has been fortunate to work in aviation all his professional life and has been working with JDRF in various capacities over the last 25 years.
