We are pleased to announce our Raising Canes Volunteer of the Month for this month is Colleen Corey.

November 19th marked the end of the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes season. This year, for the first time, the Nevada Chapter participated with the assistance of a local coach to support our riders training for the destination rides. Colleen Corey is not only a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) working for Dignity Health in the Dream Fund Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic, but she is also an expert cyclist.

Colleen’s goal for the riders this year was for the team to have fun and reach their goals. She developed a group ride schedule and training program to help the riders prepare for the distance rides.

Three of the chapter ride team members participated in the JDRF ride in Amelia Island, FL in October and Colleen and the rest of the team participated in Tucson in November.

The Nevada Chapter ride team included two people training while living with type 1 diabetes, a few people who had ridden in previous JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes events, and a few people who were brand new to riding – including one who got her bike only 90 days before the ride! Coach Colleen helped the entire team train based on their individual skill levels and prepared them for success during the ride. She sacrificed riding at an elite pace (a few years ago she finished 8th overall for women) to make sure that each Nevada Chapter rider crossed the finish line.

Colleen and her husband also own Gizmo Socks, and developed a JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes themed socks to help support chapter ride team, which has already raised several thousand dollars towards the team fundraising efforts.
