Join other individuals, families, and caregivers affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D) at all life stages for a day of education and connection at the TypeOneNation Summit (TON) and Performance in Exercise and Knowledge (PEAK) Program (new this year!). The TON and PEAK will be free of charge for all attendees, sign up for one program or both (preferable). RSVP Required. The TON portion of the day is from 8:30am-1:30pm, the PEAK portion of the day is from 1:30pm-5:00pm.

TON is the bedrock of JDRF’s vibrant community, their families and friends.Talk to experts about research advances, meet with other attendees to exchange ideas, participate in discussions important to you, and socialize.

Breakout Session Topic Options (choose 2 of 3)

  • Navigating Family Relationships through type 1diabetes (T1D): “One Family, one disease, one mission…a cure” Bonnie O’Neil, JDRF Board of Directors
  • Mindfulness, Resiliency, and Staying in the Moment: Maintaining balance between school/work, family and T1DThomas M. Sterner, expert in Present Moment Functioning (PMF), explores how participants can maintain high performance while living with T1D, and teaches us to stay in the moment, especially during high stress situations
  • Navigating the School K-12: A moderator will host a panel made up of an elelmentary school nurse, middle school nurse, a school therapist w/a diagnosis of T1D, a teacher, and a parent who has traveled this course

…and for our youth constituents, we are pleased to introduce The Resiliency Center: A community of healthcare and healing arts professionals in the greater Philadelphia Area

  • Session 1: Stress ā€“ Mind and Body

In this workshop, kids will learn about stress, how it can manifest in their bodies, and fun ways to ward off the negative symptoms associated with stress. Half of the workshop in a big group, and then break into smaller groups by age and/or diagnosis to learn practical takeaways to relax. Interventions such as meditation, mindfulness, ecotherapy, nutrition, and creative processes will be taught and practiced.

  • Session 2: Power of the Positive

Positive Psychology, pioneered by Dr. Martin Seligman at the University of Pennsylvania, is the scientific study of happiness. Learning and using positive psychology techniques can help to defend against feelings of disempowerment and shame. Half of the workshop in a big group, and then break into smaller groups by age to learn Positive Psychology techniques to employ in their daily life.

PEAK

T1D Performance in Exercise and Knowledge (PEAK) program is a unique outreach initiative to increase education on the management of physical activity for individuals living with T1D. Its goal is to break new ground in supporting safe, informed exercise within the T1D community.

Audience: Patients with T1D who exercise or wish to exercise and their caregivers and loved ones

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

o Understand the environmental, dietary, physiological, and psychosocial elements that impact physical activity in people with T1D

o Feel confident to make changes to your current T1D and exercise treatment plan o Improve Blood Glucose readings while exercising in the future.
