Bears, Bowling, & Beyond… Scenes from the 2018 One Walk Kickoff!

in , ,

Thank you to everyone who attended the 2018 Regional One Walk Kickoff and Community Outreach & Social Event this past Saturday! We had a blast kicking off this year’s East Tennessee One Walks and we were so glad to see new families as well as familiar faces in the crowd! It was a fun-filled day of information, entertainment, and camaraderie!

We started the day with informative and heartfelt speakers as we shared our Progress to Type None at the Regal Pinnacle Stadium.

Greg Nichols, a JDRF East Tennessee Board Member and our resident “science translator”, shared a research update during which he recognized recent successes like the Artificial Pancreas system but really emphasized future projects. Greg shared details about JDRF’s collaboration with IBM and discussed how data analysis helps scientists better characterize T1D and, ultimately, helps them improve outcomes. To learn more about T1D research highlights, visit Research on the Horizon.

The Bieber family graciously shared their T1D story. Parents Jeff and Virginia explained how their lives changed the day their son, William, was diagnosed with T1D when he was just 5 years old. But hope was just around the corner – six days after William’s diagnosis, the Bieber family happened upon the One Walk Tri-Cities where they say they found support and a sense of community. It was an honor to have this special family share why the One Walk is so important and why they have chosen to make JDRF their platform for awareness and hope for a cure.

Next up was Paddington 2… All eyes were on the Regal Cinemas screen as we watched the marmalade-making mischievous bear in action! We laughed! We cried! And that was just the JDRF staff…

Mmmm, marmalade…

After a quick lunch break, we reconvened at Strike and Spare Family Bowl for fun and fellowship. It was an afternoon filled with lively conversations, laughter, photo ops, friendly competition – strikes, spares, and even a few gutter balls – and celebrations of progress made! We loved seeing families from Chattanooga, Knoxville, and the Tri-Cities come together to create an even stronger type one community here in East Tennessee.

As you prepare for your city’s One Walk, please don’t hesitate to contact the East Tennessee chapter at (865) 544-0768. The staff would love to meet up to learn even more about your team and your fundraising plans. Every dollar raised funds more research for T1D! Together, we will turn type one into type none!
