JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes – How to Get Started in Cycling

JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes is your chance to come together with riders from all over the country, explore beautiful destinations, and help raise funds for JDRF. To date, JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes has raised over $50-million for type 1 diabetes! You don’t even have to be a seasoned cyclist to join, there are virtual and local coaches to help you train and reach your goals. If you’re new to cycling, here are some helpful tips to get started.

1. Choose the Right Bike

There should be an inch of space between your body and the bike frame when standing over it. Local bikes shops are a great resource to help you find the perfect bike!

2. Gear Up

The most important part of your cycling gear is a helmet. Be sure to pick a helmet that fits well. If you’re just starting, any athletic gear is great for riding. If you’re ready to take your cycling game to the next level consider a cycling kit which includes a jersey, padded bib or bike shorts, and socks. These pieces help aerodynamics while cycling and help keep you cool.

3. Make it a Habit

If you’re new to cycling, those first few miles can be intimidating. Start small and set short term goals. Find a cycling group that can help support you in reaching your goals!

4. Be Safe

Don’t forget to follow traffic laws. While music is a great motivator, don’t wear headphones or earbuds, especially on busy roads. Always carry a form of ID in case of an emergency.

Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or a rookie rider, there are always training rides to get your started or help you set new goals. The first JDRF local training ride, with local coach Bill Timmons, will be Sunday, May 12 at 8:00 AM. Riders will meet at the Monarch Levee Bike Trail at the Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex. To reach the Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex trail head, from I-64, take Exit 14 toward Spirit of St. Louis Blvd. At the traffic circle, take the exit onto N. Outer 40 Road. Take an immediate turn north and then east into the athletic field parking area and trail head.
