Tale of a Type One Champion – Gayle Williams

Each year cyclists from around the Pacific Northwest participate in JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes fundraisers across the US. Gayle Williams has done 11 Ride to Cure events in the past 12 years and become a passionate advocate for T1D, despite having no direct connection to the disease.

Gayle completed her first JDRF Ride with a group of fellow moms from her childā€™s school. She initially saw it as a personal challenge to get on her bike, and had no idea how inspiring and motivating her Ride experiences would become.

Gayle now tries to do one JDRF Ride every year. This year she completed the Saratoga Springs Ride in September. ā€œIt was hot, hilly, humid and AMAZING ā€“ just like every year.ā€ She also attended the Death Valley Ride as a volunteer.

Over the years Gayle has experienced a variety of Ride climates and conditions, but she says the strong support network at each event remains constant. ā€œItā€™s not about the miles. Itā€™s about the weekend and the community.ā€ Gayle has ridden alongside riders of all ages, experience levels and T1D connections, and says the Ride brings out some of the most determined people she has ever met.

Gayleā€™s dedication to Ride to Cure was recognized in 2014 when she was awarded the JDRF Spirit Jersey, and again in 2017 when she was awarded the JDRF Promise Jersey. Jerseys are awarded at every JDRF Ride as a way to honor and celebrate the efforts of riders and volunteers who make it all possible. To date, JDRF Ride events have raised more than $47 million for T1D research.

For anyone considering doing their first JDRF Ride, Gayle recommends leaning into the local chapterā€™s coaches and team members. ā€œEven if you are a skilled rider, attend the training rides to get to know the other riders.Ā  Engage with the other riders and ask them questions. We are all very interested in supporting each other.ā€

Gayle continues to ride with some of the original moms from her first year, along with additional friends who have joined them over the years. ā€œI love the support you receive at every ride. Those weekends are rejuvenating.ā€
