• Lauren Bongiorno, founder and CEO of Risely Health, is challenging the current healthcare system and the world of diabetes management through her company's innovative health coaching programs and online educational classes. Lauren has navigated Type 1 Diabetes first hand since she was 7 years old and believes that when health transforms, so does everything else - our relationships, our time, our career, our families, and, most importantly, ourselves. Georgetown medical students are currently researching Risely's methods to publish the quantitative and qualitative results clients see in their programs. Lauren has been featured on the TODAY Show, has partnered with some of the largest diabetes technology companies, and is "making waves in the diabetes space on both a personal and systemic level."

Gary Scheiner MS, CDCES

Gary Scheiner is owner and Clinical Director of Integrated Diabetes Services, a practice located just outside of Philadelphia specializing in intensive insulin therapy and advanced education for children and adults.

Gary has been a Certified Diabetes Educator for since 1995 and has had Type-1 diabetes since 1985. Gary was named 2014 Diabetes Educator of the Year by the American Association of Diabetes Educators. He has written seven books, including the best-selling “Think Like A Pancreas-A Practical Guide to Managing Diabetes With Insulin”. He lectures nationally and internationally for people with diabetes as well as professionals in the healthcare industry. In addition to serving on the faculty of Children With Diabetes and the Board of Directors for JDRF, Gary volunteers for the American Diabetes Association, Diabetes Sisters, and Setebaid Diabetes Camps.

Marc Adelberg, DDS

T1D Care Team Panelist

Dr. Marc Adelberg has been delivering outstanding pediatric dentistry since 1998. He received his undergraduate education from the University of Albany, majoring in psychology, and his dental education from the University of Buffalo. He completed a two-year residency in pediatric dentistry at Montefiore Medical Center, the hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, graduating in 1998. He is a board-certified pediatric dentist.

“Dr Marc” has also been trained and certified with Vivos Therapeutics, an integrated medical and dental sleep disordered breathing center. Additionally, he has been trained on both the Hoya Con Bio and Biolase dental lasers, as well as PBM lasers. Also, he has trained at the Academy for Sports Dentistry.

“Dr. Marc” can also be seen on the lecture scene. Nationally, he has lectured at the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), the Dental Entrepreneurial Organization (DEO), and the Association of Dental Support Organizations (ADSO). Locally he has lectured to residents at pediatric dental residencies as well as mommy-and-me groups, pre-schools, nursery schools, kindergarten, and pre-natal hospital groups.

He is the founding and senior partner of Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics. When not seeing patients, he acts as the CEO/visionary for the team.
He was raised on Long Island and maintains a home with his wife and family of three children there.

Dena Lampert, LCSW, CASAC, A-CbT

Dena has been living with T1D for 13 years and since her diagnosis, has committed to supporting those affected by this disease through JDRF support groups and her professional work as a therapist. Dena currently owns a group psychotherapy practice in Rockville Centre, New York called Triangle Cognitive Therapy.  She oversees a group with nine other mental health providers who offer individual, group, family and couples therapy to adolescents and adults. Daniel O. Phelan

Daniel is a former professional baseball player turned commercial real estate attorney. Currently, Daniel is an associate in the litigation department at Adler & Stachenfeld in New York City where he handles complex corporate litigation matters. Additionally, Daniel is the founder, Chairman & Chief
Executive Officer of the Type 1 Action Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to
helping and empowering those with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Daniel speaks publicly, keynoting
conferences and galas all over the world where he speaks about getting in the game and his
personal experiences growing up and playing professional baseball with T1D in an effort to
empower people with T1D, as well as speaking to bring awareness to, and promote the legal rights
of people with T1D by educating communities, families and individuals affected by T1D.

With an extensive roster of favorable resolutions in his matters involving diabetes through the
Type 1 Action Foundation, Daniel was the first attorney in the United States to successfully focus
a law practice on diabetes law, changing the landscape for how people with T1D are
accommodated in schools and in the workplace through disability discrimination matters under the
Americans with Disabilities Act in United States District Court, and through special education
hearings in school. Today, to better help a greater amount of the T1D community, Daniel has
shifted the focus of the Type 1 Action Foundation to be more of an educational resource for people
with T1D, providing free information and resources such as a 504 Plan template, a Diabetes
Medical Management Plan template, and a packet to present to an employer explaining the rights
of people with T1D in the workplace with an area to request reasonable workplace
accommodations. Also, through an extensive network of attorneys around the United States, the
Type 1 Action Foundation is able to assist people with T1D who are facing legal issues by
connecting them to attorneys in their area who are able to personally help them, while also being
an educational resource for those attorneys as well.

Peter Friedfeld

Peter is the co-founder and facilitator with the DiabetesSangha, dedicated to sharing his experiences in living a more thoughtful and engaged life with T1D with others.  Peter is also the executive consultant to the new film, Pay or Die, regarding the insulin crisis in America , and recent speaker at the ADCES conference .

Peter’s sorry : At the carefree age of 56, I was quite surprised to be diagnosed with Diabetes, on Valentines Day no less. Talk about Self-Compassion. For my first year I lived a life trying to accept this misdiagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes, only to be correctly diagnosed as Type 1 eighteen months later. During that time, I developed an engaged yoga practice which helped me heal my mind and body. In the early days of COVID under home confinement (everything from home) I began my relationship with a mindfulness practice and Zen teachings—both of which have helped me immensely in so many ways. I am passionate about connecting in this community and in finding ways to give back , to continually share my experiences, and in growing from these relationships.

James Maisel, M.D.

T1D Care Team Panelist

Dr. Maisel, founder of the Retina Group of New York, is a Board Certified ophthalmologist who completed the Dyson fellowship in Vitreous and Retinal surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. He has received a Special Congressional Award for his work in diabetic retinopathy and the Banko Gift of Sight Award. He also was named the 2017 JDRF Humanitarian of the year.

He has served as a Corporate Advisory Board member for the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the JDRF Medical Advisory Board. He was also a member of the AAO Instrument and Device and Low Vision Committees and has received research grants from the U.S. Public Health Service and the National Institute of Health. Dr. Maisel represented the National Society to Prevent Blindness at the ANSI Z-80 committee where he helped establish many ophthalmic industry standards. He served as an editor of EyeCare Technology Magazine and co-editor of Diabetes Technology Magazine. He also authored numerous professional journal articles, and lectures nationally on retina, medical informatics and practice management topics. In addition, he has been a clinical investigator, consultant, educator, and advisory board member for Pfizer, Novartis, Genentech, Alimera, Regeneron and Allergan, educating retinal specialists across the US.

Kimberly Andreacchio, RD, CDN, CDCES

Kimberly is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist. She obtained a Bachelor's in Science in Nutrition & Dietetics from Long Island University and completed her dietetic internship at Cedar Crest College. She has worked as a Registered Dietitian in both clinical and outpatient settings. She served on the board for the Long Island Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for several years and currently the Metro NY Chapter of the Association for Diabetes Care & Education Specialists. She has been recognized for her hard work and dedication with the Certified Diabetes Educator of the Year Award as well as the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year Award in 2019.
Kimberly has been a long time volunteer with JDRF attending walks, presenting to the community at various events including previous Type One Nation Summits and monthly Zoom calls for the Parents of Toddlers Program. She has volunteered at a camp for children with type one diabetes every year since 2008 as a counselor, dietitian and medical staff. Kimberly is extremely passionate about and dedicated to the diabetes community and continuously seeks opportunities to remain connected.
