TypeOneNation Summit FAQs

From funding innovative research to advocating for government action to providing a support structure for our community, no other organization does more to fight type 1 diabetes (T1D) than JDRF.  One way the JDRF supports our community is by providing educational and networking opportunities for the T1D community.

 What is the TypeOneNation Summit?

The TypeOneNation Summit is an all-day educational and networking opportunity for the T1D community. It brings together T1D experts to share their knowledge on the latest treatments, breakthroughs in research, and the psycho-social aspects of living (and thriving) with T1D.

Who should attend?

The event will have unique opportunities for T1D children, teens, adults, as well as their parents, siblings, significant others and caregivers.

When and where is the 2020 TypeOneNation Summit?

The 2020 Greater Western Carolina TypeOneNation Summit will take place on Saturday, January 11, 2020 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Crowne Plaza Executive Park, 5700 West Park Drive, Charlotte, NC 28217

 What time does the TypeOneNation Summit start?

Check in will begin at 8:00am and the program will begin at 9:00am. The Summit ends at 4:00 pm

What is the COST TO ATTEND the TypeOneNation Summit?

$25.00 registration fee per person (discount code available until 12/01/2019).   Registration fees include: morning snack, lunch, light afternoon snack; researcher and motivational keynote addresses, workshop sessions, vendor fair opportunities throughout the day, and kids’ activities.

What if my family needs help covering the cost of TypeOneNation Summit?

Scholarships are available to cover the cost of registration. Please contact us to request a scholarship application.

Is parking free?

Yes, parking is free at the Crowne Plaza Executive Park.

Will I need money at the Summit?

YES, we will have several vendors with products available for purchase.  The hotel also has restaurant, bar and coffee shop should you wish to purchase any food or beverage items beyond what is being served at the summit.

 What breakout sessions are offered at TypeOneNation Summit?

We have planned separate workshop tracks for parents/caregivers of children living with T1D, and for adults living with T1D.  Each track will include 12 workshop options plus research and motivational keynote addresses.  Although there will be recommended workshops for each track, participants will be able to attend any workshop session that meets their individual needs. Do I need to choose to identify which workshops I will attend in advance during the registration process?

NO, on the day of the event, participants will select which workshop they will attend from the options listed for each Break-out Session on a first-come, first-served basis.

Will childcare be provided?

YES, there will be educational programming for all children, ages 5-12, T1D and siblings. The Diabetes Family Connection will facilitate all the camp activities with the children.

What can my teen do at the summit?

Teens, ages 13-16, will have their own programming this year. This programming will be facilitated by The Diabetes Family Connection Braveheart Counselors and other support staff. The programming will incorporate  opportunities to discuss what it is like to live with T1D, camp like activities, and building leadership skills for the future.

Will there be volunteers to help my child manage their T1D while I am at a workshop?

YES, there will be volunteers available to support your child in managing their T1D throughout the day. They will help treat lows if they arise, these volunteers will NOT deliver insulin to any child. Parents / caregivers and their child/children will have lunch together.  JDRF will not be held responsible for blood sugar levels & insulin dosages. There will be medical professionals on site in case of emergencies.

How will I be notified if my child needs me?

Upon check-in at the Summit, you and your child/children will receive a security bracelet. You will be instructed to add your cell number to both bracelets. This number will be to match your child for security reasons, as well as be able to call or text you if your child/children need your support.

Are snacks provided to treat low blood sugars?

YES, there will be low snacks such as juice and glucose tabs provided by JDRF. If your child has a favorite low snack, please be sure to bring them with you.

Who will keep my child’s medical supplies throughout the day?

Your child should be prepared to carry their supplies with them throughout the day. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO LABEL GLUCOMETERS AND MEDICAL BAGS, as many of our children carry and use the same supplies, we do not want to mix them up.

Will my child/children be eating lunch with me?
YES, you will pick up your child/children before lunch.

Will there be carb counts for food provided at the Summit?
YES, we will offer estimate carb counts for all food provided.

Is there a discounted room rate at the hotel for the Summit?

YES, a discounted JDRF Room Rate will be available for Friday, January 10, 2020. Get your discounted room rate: JDRF Group Block

Where will the Friday Night Lights Family Event be held?

At the Crowne Plaza Executive Park on January 10, 2019 from 7:00 – 9:00pm, the night before the summit.

Do I have to attend the Friday Night Lights Events in order to attend the Summit?
No, but of course, we would love to see you at both!

What ages is the T1D Friday Family Fun Night tailored for?
T1D families of all ages! There will be a _____________, snacks, a cash bar for adults and a ton of networking opportunities for everyone.

Can T1Ds bring siblings to the Friday Night Lights Family Event?
YES!  We want the whole family!  There will be fun for all!

Can I drop my child off at the Friday Family Fun Night?
You are welcome to join other parents in the foyer outside of the Friday Night Lights Family Event; but you MUST remain in the area while your child is enjoying the evening!
