Laps for a Cure: Spotlight on Grand Lakes Gators

For the second year running, this neighborhood Swim Team in Katy has held a Swim-A-Thon to fundraise for JDRF support – awarding us this year with $1100! On June 1, swimmers from four different age groups came out at their normal practice times and swam as many laps as they could in their group’s allotted times. Parent and family volunteers counted the laps, and sponsors could pledge a flat or per lap amount. Half the funds raised would go to the team’s equipment and apparel needs, and the other half would be generously donated to a charity. With so many type one connections on the board and throughout the team, JDRF made sense, according to Diana Bowdery, VICE PRESIDENT.

The team boasts 244 members, with a waiting list for more. The day consisted of enthusiastic swimmers, music, lots of dancing!, popsicles, diving board contests, and coach’s inflatable race undertaken by very entertaining coaches. Junior coach, Daniel Bowdery, was diagnosed with type 1 at eight years old and is a counselor at Camp Rainbow.

Thank you, Gators, for inviting us out and for your laps for a cure.
