On July 18, 2013 Governor Quinn signed into law House Bill 1815 sponsored by State Representative Tom Cross; a new initiative to raise funds for diabetes research by authorizing the Secretary of State to design and issue special license plates promoting diabetes awareness.

However, the design and production of the Diabetes Research Specialty Plates cannot begin until the Secretary of State’s office receives at least 1,500 requests from those interested in purchasing the plate.
