We caught up with Adam, who was nice enough to give us his thoughts on some of the latest diabetes technology and a sneak peek at his keynote.
JDRF Illinois: What can attendees expect from your keynote at TypeOneNation on February 25th?
Adam: Iāll give everyone a fast-paced update on all the exciting things happening in diabetes technology: automated insulin delivery (also known as the āartificial pancreasā or āclosed loopā) systems like the Medtronic 670G; new glucose sensors like the Dexcom G6 and Abbottās FreeStyle Libre; new pumps like Tandemās t:slim X2; the latest meters; and cool new apps – including what I use.
For a preview, check out diaTribe.orgās just-published review of the closed loop field. If you want to know what systems are coming and when, this is the piece to read!
I might even give a sneak preview of my upcoming book! š
You review and test a lot of technology for diaTribe. What is your favorite/most interesting thing in diabetes technology that you have tested recently?
Iāve been using the open-source, do-it-yourself (DIY) automated insulin delivery system, Loop. This allows me to run closed-loop off my iPhone using a small relay device (RileyLink), a Dexcom CGM, and an old Medtronic pump. Itās been great overnight!
I also recently got an Apple Watch and have loved viewing Dexcom G5 data on my wrist and using the watch for meditation and exercise tracking. Iām actually using my phone less often, which is helping with my stress levels too.
Is there a device or advancement on the horizon that you are excited about?
Automated insulin delivery for sure! Next-gen glucose sensors like the G6 and FreeStyle Libre real-time. You can see our very recent review of whatās on the diabetes tech horizon here.
Iām also excited to see apps like Medtronic/IBM Watsonās Sugar.IQ coming out soon. I think this will really help people with diabetes pair cause and effect and learn more hidden patterns in their data.
Is there anything else youāre looking forward to doing while youāre in Chicago?
I LOVE speaking to people with diabetes, answering questions, and sharing tips that can be helpful. Please come prepared with questions – on devices, T1D management, food, exercise, stress, etc. – or send them ahead of time to adam@diaTribe.org!
