Join the Discussion at TypeOneNation

ton-header

Following the rave reviews from last year’s Summit, we are glad to announce the return of our interactive panel discussions to TypeOneNation on Saturday, February 25th. This year’s panels will include “Financing and Insuring T1D,” “T1D in the Workplace,” “Going Off to College,” and a teen-only panel.

The first discussion of the day is “Financing and Insuring T1D” which will focus on insurance, financial, and healthcare questions. This session’s panelists include Lisa Callaway, JDRF Advocate and parent of a child with T1D; Alysia Huber, RN, DNPc at Rockford Memorial Hospital as well as representatives from the insurance and financial services industries.

“T1D and the Workplace” begins at 11:00am and will highlight issues impacting the professional life of someone affected by T1D – the balance between safety and privacy, connecting with your supervisor about your health, and other important topics. Dr. Grazia Aleppo, Medical Director of the Northwestern Medicine Diabetes Education Program; Dr. Jean Norris, JDRF Illinois Board member; and Kim Christiansen, Program Director of Human Resources at KishHeath, will participate in this session.

The panel during the 1:00pm breakout session will focus on ““Going Off to College,” addressing issues such as independence, accommodations, and preparations that teens and parents should discuss before a child embarks on this important phase of their lives. Panelists include: Dr. Vidhya Viswanathan, Pediatric Endocrinologist from Hope Children’s Hospital; Lea Taylor, parent of a college student with T1D; Dr. Jodi Falk, Assistant Director of the Center for Students with Disabilities at DePaul and a college student with T1D.

During the ten o’clock hour, a panel of teens and young adults will share their personal experiences with T1D . Parents will not be allowed to sit in on the session, creating a safe space for teens to talk openly about the situations they face in their day-to-day lives with diabetes. Dr. Anita Swamy, pediatric endocrinologist and Medical Director of the Chicago Children’s Diabetes Center at La Rabida Children’s Hospital, will also help support teens and answer any tough questions.
