“Any amount of time is too long to wait for a cure when you or someone you love has T1D. An autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults, and causes lifelong dependence on injected insulin. T1D carries the constant threat of devastating, life-threatening complications and requires 24/7 management.

I watch my daughter, Olivia, live with type 1 diabetes (T1D) every minute of every day. Over the last 11 years, she has endured more finger pokes, injections, and sleepless nights than anyone should have to bear – but there is hope. This is the same hope that compelled fellow T1D moms, Lee Ducat and Carol Lurie, to establish JDRF in 1970.

The advances in technology over the last decade are amazing. Olivia now wears an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor – both lessen the daily burden of the disease and help control high and low blood sugars to ensure complications aren’t a part of her future. This is due to JDRF research funding and the generosity of donors. Still, our work is not done until there is a cure.
