Volunteer Spotlight – TypeOneNation Summit 2019

in ,

Thank you to all the speakers, vendors, volunteers, and participants at the TypeOneNation Summit held on Saturday, February 23rd at the South Point Hotel Casino and Spa. The TypeOneNation Summit began in Las Vegas in 2011, as one of the first conferences of its kind in JDRF, and continues today through the support of local and national sponsors.

There were over 75 volunteers assisting with the TypeOneNation Summit this year. They volunteered in a variety of areas such as event set-up, the diabetes exhibitor space, main keynote room, the Kids’ Zone, event check in, and event clean up. Many volunteers demonstrated extraordinary service and commitment to JDRF and went above and beyond to make the event a success.

Event Check In this year was staffed by a team from MGM Resorts. Led by JDRF Nevada Chapter Board Member Stacey Rowland, they kept the check in process running smooth and quickly for all our guests. Georgia Sallows, the 2017-2018 Reed and Shelli Gialketsis Volunteer of the Year, also provided invaluable guidance at the check in desk, having tirelessly worked check in at most of our chapter events the past several years.

Stephanie Broecker, the mom of a daughter with type 1 diabetes, planned and led all the activities for the Kids’ Zone this year. The Kids’ Zone is specialized programming for children ages 5-12 during the Summit. They participated in arts and crafts, exercise, diabetes education, and other activities all under the care of activity leaders and health care professionals to keep them safe. Stephanie kept the Kids’ Zone organized and fun throughout the day.

Special thanks also to Rochelle and Brandon Baumia. The husband and wife team were originally scheduled to volunteer only during the morning activities, and arrived at 6 am to help with the event set up. Rochelle and Brandon instead spent the entire day assisting in a variety of areas around the event including helping with packing and loading the JDRF materials after the event concluded. We are very thankful for their flexibility and dedication to JDRF.

Thank you again to all our wonderful volunteers! If you are interested in volunteering with JDRF, please contact the office at nevada@jdrf.org or 702-732-4795. The JDRF Hope Gala is Friday, May 10, and requires a large team of volunteers to help the chapter reach the goal of raising over $1 million for type 1 diabetes research.
