If you attend TypeOneNation Summit for Adults Living with T1D, you will not need to select a break-out session. All programming will be held in one room. The following sessions will be provided:

Mission Update (presented by Dr. Aaron Kowalski)

Hear directly from JDRF President and CEO, Dr. Aaron Kowalski, who will provide this year’s Mission Update.

As JDRF President and CEO, Aaron Kowalski drives strategies to accelerate progress toward curing type 1 diabetes (T1D) and improving lives of those living with the disease today.

Aaron, who joined JDRF in 2004 and most recently served as Chief Mission Officer, is an internationally recognized scientific expert in T1D research who brings to the role both personal experience of living with T1D for over 35 years and a natural ability to engage the T1D community.

He has helped shape the innovative work that defined JDRFā€™s therapy pipeline aimed at accelerating progress in each development stage so that advances in the lab can be turned into real solutions.

Balancing Diabetes: A Conversation About Finding Happiness and Living Well (presented by Kerri Sparling)

Join longtime PWD and writer Kerri Sparling for a frank, honest, and entertaining discussion about life after a diabetes diagnosis. Ā Bring your questions!

Kerri is an internationally recognized diabetes advocate. She is the creator and author ofĀ Six Until MeĀ  which from May 2005 to May 2019 was one of the most widely-read diabetes patient blogs, reaching a global audience of patients, caregivers, and industry. She has been featured on NPR, US News and World Report, CBNC, Yahoo! Health, LA Times, The Lancet, Whole Living, Disneyā€™s Family.com, and Family Circle, among other national outlets. In addition to her writing, Kerri is a highly-rated speaker and has presented the patient perspective to audiences around the world. She works to raise awareness for diabetes, patient advocacy, and the influence of social media on health outcomes.

Kerriā€™s participation is part of Tandem Diabetes Careā€™s Live Life in Full Color speaker series.

Making Sense of Glucose Sensors (presented by Gary Scheiner, MS, CDE)

Gary Scheiner, MS, CDE will discuss pump and sensor integration, hybrid closed loop technology, continuous glucose data, including how to effectively use the data in real time and analyze your own data.

Gary Scheiner is owner and Clinical Director of Integrated Diabetes Services, a practice located just outside of Philadelphia specializing in intensive insulin therapy and advanced education for children and adults. He and his staff provide consultations throughout the world via phone and the internet.

Fueling For the Game
Adapted from JDRF’s PEAK (Performance in Exercise and Knowledge) Program, Colleen Clark Chuo, RN, MA, CDE, CPT session will cover nutrition and exercise based topics,including:

  • Why nutrition matters for exercise and performance
  • There is more to nutrition than carbohydrate: A brief look at important micronutrients (ā€œthe small stuffā€)
  • Getting the basics right (macronutrients): Protein, carbohydrate, and fats (ā€œthe big stuffā€)
  • Fueling for exercise and competition
  • Weight management tips

 

Colleen Clark Chuo received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing at the University of Scranton and a Master of Arts degree in Nursing Education from New York University. With 13 years of experience as a Certified Diabetes Educator caring for children and adults with diabetes in hospitals and out-patient settings, Colleen has been invited to speak at numerous nursing conferences and diabetes events.
