Thousands of One Walkers Come Together for JDRF

2017 One Walk

On Sunday, October 1, a dedicated crowd of families, business groups, and individuals participated in our most popular fundraiser at our Chapter: the JDRF One Walk. Held annually the first Sunday in October, the Walk provides an opportunity to involve the community in an event that truly captures the energy and passion of our supporters and displays their commitment to finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Not only does it serve as an opportunity to meet and connect with others affected by the disease, it also spreads awareness of our cause beyond the T1D community itself.

This year, about 5,500 walkers gathered at the South Steps of the State Capitol, then completed the route down Capitol Mall to Raley Field and back, crossing Tower Bridge on the way. Participants enjoyed clear skies and sunny autumn weather — slightly warmer than years past, but still perfect for walking. Kendall Simmons, retired NFL player and two-time Super Bowl Champion inspired walkers with his own T1D story and being diagnosed at the age of 24 at the height of his football career. Dos Coyotes generously arranged for unlimited ice cream for all walkers, and EMIGH Hardware donated pumpkins for children to decorate in the kidsā€™ area. Youth activities also included meeting the Storm Troopers and other members of the 501st Legion who attended the walk, all dressed in Star Wars costumes.

We would like to thank our One Walk leadership team for another successful event, especially Walk Chair Dr. Chris Zegers and Corporate Walk Chair Mark Polli (owner of our corporate sponsor, Crunch Fitness). With their effective management and organization, we were able to continue our yearly commitment to this engaging, community-oriented fundraiser.

In total, this yearā€™s walk has raised $298,902 and counting in support of T1D research. Every contribution brings us one step closer to our ultimate goal of eliminating T1D, and this mission will rapidly approach reality in the near future as technology continues to evolve. We thank the thousands of donors and supporters who participated in this event, and we hope to see you all again next year!
