One Walk Team ‘Rookie of the Year’ – Team Aubree

in ,

Every year, the JDRF One Walk invites hundreds of newly diagnosed families and individuals living with T1D to this inspirational event. The walk provides a supportive atmosphere for newly diagnosed T1Ds and their families, who are quickly welcomed to the T1D community. First-time walkers also gain valuable support and advice from veteran participants, joining JDRF’s vast network. This includes Team Aubree, who was recognized as our 2017 One Walk “Rookie of the Year” for their outstanding fundraising efforts!

Aubree Kauss was just two years old when her pediatrician recognized possible signs of type one diabetes.  He ordered testing and by that same evening, Aubree was diagnosed with T1D and admitted to the hospital..  Her family felt helpless as they watched Aubree struggle with the diagnosis, unsure of how to give her a normal life. Luckily, the hospital provided them with JDRF’s contact information and soon, they were the recipients of the JDRF Bag of Hope backpack containing educational resources and Rufus the teddy bear with T1D. As they discovered more about the organization, Aubree’s mother Kortney learned about the One Walk and decided to form a team as a way to get involved in T1D advocacy.

Aubree’s teammates began the fundraising process and soon found considerable support from friends and family. According to Kortney, “we found that people were pretty responsive. Beyond that, though, we found support. Many people shared their experience with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes and gave tips and information.” Team Aubree eventually raised $4,275 with over $600 from 7 different states! Following their success in 2017, four new members have already asked to join the 2018 team and are readying themselves for this year’s Walk, complete with t-shirts and hats in Aubree’s favorite shade of purple. Aubree’s father Bruce shared, “the experience showed us that we were not alone and there were people out there not only fighting for a cure, but helping to cope with diabetes on a day to day basis.” We also want to specially recognize now 3-year old Aubree who walked 90% of the 5K trek!

We congratulate Team Aubree for their wonderful fundraising efforts and support of JDRF!  Registration for the Sunday, October 7th 2018 Walk is now open.  To learn more or to register, visit our One Walk website.  You can also join us on Saturday, June 16th at 10:00 AM for a kick-off event at the Guild Theater in Sacramento.  Together, we can walk towards a cure!
