“My passion to serve the JDRF community was ignited by a former supervisor, who was an excellent leader and will be my friend forever. She invited me to a Halloween costume party that she planned to benefit JDRF. I was incredibly inspired by her show of corporate social responsibility, while navigating a very successful career and raising two wonderful kids. In addition, my husband’s cousin’s side of the family participates at an annual tournament to raise awareness and funds for JDRF.
It wasn’t until 2016 that I really stepped up to the plate by her example. I had been recently hired on at Union Pacific Railroad (UP) and I aspired to make a difference for my new company, our community and the world. In 2016, I volunteered to be a UP JDRF fundraising coordinator for the 10th Floor Team. With little to no former event planning or fundraising experience, I endeavored to host a Silent Auction. I decided it would be more fun and effective to extend the invite to all UP employees who work in Omaha, rather than only the 10th Floor personnel. The event was largely successful, and totally worth it. I discovered there are people with T1D all around me, some that even work only a few desks away from mine.
As a result, JDRF asked UP to cut the ribbon at the annual Omaha-Council Bluffs One Walk and UP rewarded me with that honor, which I bestowed to someone much more deserving…my cousin’s son, Wyatt, who was just 8 years old and living with type 1 diabetes (T1D).
In 2017, I wanted to host another big event, but decided it would be more fun to plan a Scavenger Hunt. The event was a blast, and we are hosting another one this year. For all three events, the staff at JDRF has been a wonderful partner to UP. They deserve most of the credit for making what at one time seems impossible, POSSIBLE. Also, for bringing people who care together, and providing them the tools, inspiration and courage to make a difference!
Together, I’m certain that we can make Type 1 – TYPE NONE!
Join us on Saturday, August 25th at the 2018 JDRF One Walk!”
