Read-Aloud Book for Kids with T1D: “When I Go Low”

“When I Go Low” is about Jax the Cat who lives with type 1 diabetes — sometimes he wishes he didn’t. He especially doesn’t like low blood sugars. One day, Jax goes for a stroll through the neighborhood to meet other kids with T1D. And with each new friend, Jax learns a new symptom of low blood sugar!

Ginger Vieira has lived with type 1 diabetes since she was 13 years old, along with Celiac, fibromyalgia, and hypothyroidism. She is the author of several books: When I Go Low (for kids!), Pregnancy with Type 1 Diabetes, Dealing with Diabetes Burnout, Emotional Eating with Diabetes, Your Diabetes Science Experiment. Ginger has created content for a variety of websites, including Diabetes Strong, DiabetesMine, Healthline, and more. Today, she is the Digital Content Manager for Beyond Type 1 & Beyond Type 2. Her background includes a B.S. in Professional Writing, certifications in cognitive coaching, Ashtanga yoga, and personal training with several records in drug-free powerlifting. She lives in Vermont with two kiddos, her handsome fella, and their amazing dog, Pedro.

Mike Lawson has lived with type 1 diabetes since he was 20 years old, and he loves drawing cartoons about life with T1D! He is well-known throughout the diabetes online community for his artistic skills, and his first kids' book "Open Up Your Bag" helps young people with diabetes create and normalize their diabetes management routines. Over year years, Mike has worked extensively in the diabetes community for non-profit diabetes organizations and campaigns like The Big Blue Test, Spare A Rose, and TuDiabetes. Today, Mike lives in California where he serves as the Director of Audience Services for Broadway SF.
