2018 One Walk Recap

‘It was nice to see we’re not alone’: Families affected by type 1 diabetes walk to raise money

More than 8,000 people came together from across Colorado and Wyoming to participate in the 2018 Denver and Colorado Springs JDRF One Walks, and are anticipated to raise over $780,000 for type one diabetes research.

“This is our first year,” shared team captain, Arian Quintana. “We’re learning a lot, and it was nice to come out and see the support and all the other type one’s.”

Arian’s son, 9-year-old Xavieus, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last year. She and her family were amazed to see all the participants. “I was shocked,” Quintana said. “It was nice to see we’re not alone.”

That’s the point of the JDRF One Walk. “We hope that people take away a sense of community and a sense of hope,” says organizer Rachel LeClere. “We hope they are inspired by the mission of JDRF and that they know they’re not alone.”

Arian and her family were interviewed and featured on news station, KKTV. Click here to view her full interview.

About JDRF One Walk:

Each year, JDRF One Walk brings together more than 900,000 people across the country to change the future for everyone living with type 1 diabetes (T1D). This fun, family–friendly event gives people with T1D—and their friends, family and co–workers—the opportunity to raise money for life-changing T1D research.

Over 6,000 people gathered September 16 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds for the 28th annual JDRF One Walk in Denver. The beautiful day was a chance for walkers to celebrate their fundraising success and included outstanding performances by the bFlatirons a cappella group, Artistic Fusion Dance Academy, and Denver Broncos Jr. Cheerleaders.  Walkers were also entertained by the 501st Legion Storm Troopers and enjoyed sugar-free Slurpees from 7-11. Walkers showed their T1D spirit by dying their hair blue at the Floyd’s 99 Barbershop Bus, and anyone with type 1 diabetes was given an exclusive JDRF T1D bandanna to sport for the day.

The Colorado Springs community came together October 13 for the 18th annual JDRF One Walk. Held at Rock Ledge Ranch, approximately 2,000 people enjoyed stunning views on a picture perfect day. Fun lawn games and crafts kept the kids busy, the Barbara Ellis Studio of Dance choreographed an inspiring dance about the T1D journey, Tianna Cook shared a moving poem during the opening ceremony, and walkers celebrated their hero’s along the Mile of Hope.
