One Day, One Cause, One Mission – hear what the experts have to say

 JDRF Texas, with affiliate offices in Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Amarillo and Laredo will join forces and resources to host a full day of education and inspiration on living well with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

To bring national and local experts in the fields of research, technology, nutrition and personal well- being together to educate and empower the T1D community at all levels of diagnosis and need including basic and advanced care, social and emotional needs and critical care advancements.

To meet the needs of those affected by T1D including the newly diagnosed, parents of children with T1D, adults living with the disease for many years.

To provide a forum where the T1D community can interact with one another, visit with exhibitors and learn from leading experts in the care and management of type 1 diabetes.

To engage children with T1D and their siblings in a fun and interactive Child Track.

To minimize anxiety and maximize confidence of grandparents and other alternate caregivers to safely care for a child with T1D.

To provide in-depth training for RN’s in a school environment that will increase their knowledge and understanding of the medical, emotional and nutritional complexities of T1D and enable them to provide better care outcomes for their student patients.

FEATURED SPEAKERS:

Richard Insel, M.D., JDRF Chief Scientific Officer – Dr. Insel leads the strategic direction and oversight of all JDRF research projects. He has a distinguished medical and research career in pediatric immunology and was founding director of the Center for Human Genetics and Molecular Pediatric Disease. Dr. Insel will open the conference with a research update on the State of JDRF – promising and critical research currently on the horizon and in the pipeline for the next three to five years. He then will present research specific sessions focused on a Pathway to a Cure at 1p.m., Encapsulation at 2p.m. and Prevention at 4:30p.m.

Nicole Johnson, former Miss America, 1999, diagnosed with type 1, 1993 – Nicole Johnson has served as an international consultant and advocate for diabetes issues for more than twelve years. She is an award-winning television journalist and an avid writer having written six books including her most recent diabetes cookbook, Nicole Johnson’s Diabetes Recipe Makeovers. Ms. Johnson has tirelessly promoted awareness, prevention and early detection of type 1 diabetes and has helped to raise over $26 million for diabetes research and programs. In addition to offering the Keynote Address at the conference dinner, Ms. Johnson will conduct an afternoon session, Pregnancy and Parenting with T1D, at 4:40p.m.

Kerri Sparling – Ms. Sparling has been living with type 1 diabetes for more than 27 years. She enjoys a national reputation as the creator of one of the first and most widely-read diabetes patient blogs worldwide, Six Until Me, reaching a global audience of patients, caregivers and industry. A popular speaker at diabetes focused conferences throughout the world, Kerri is a full- time writer and consultant. Her first book, Balancing Diabetes, is scheduled for release this spring. Ms. Sparling will present Musings with Kerri Sparling at 2p.m. and Communicating with your Health Care Team & Advocating for What you Need at 4:30p.m.

Gary Scheiner – Recently named 2014 Diabetes Educator of the Year by the American Association of Diabetes Educators, Gary Scheiner, a type 1 since 1985, is an award-winning Certified Diabetes Educator, Masters-level Exercise Physiologist dedicated to improving the lives of people with insulin- dependent diabetes. The author of six books, including Think Like A Pancreas, Mr. Scheiner has had dozens of published articles for consumer and trade magazines and diabetes websites. He will present three different sessions at TypeOneNation, Making Sense of Sensor Data at 1p.m., Sports & Exercise at 3:30p.m. and, Until There Is A Cure at 4:30p.m.

Joe Solowiejczyk – Mr. Solowiejczyk is the Clinical Manager of Counseling & Presentations for Animas Corporation, a Johnson and Johnson Company. He has lived with Type 1 for more than 40 years and, as a nurse, diabetes educator and family therapist, he specializes in assessing how family dynamics impact the management of diabetes and designs interventions that result in more effective coping and optimal metabolic control. Joe works extensively with both patients and professionals on the Family-Approach to Diabetes Management. He will present Joe Solowiejczyk’s Hour at 1p.m. and For Parents with Joe at 3:30p.m.
