JDRF San Diego congratulates Alan Trammell on being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Trammell hit .285 and collected 2,365 hits during his 20-year career, and won four Gold Gloves at shortstop, all with the Detroit Tigers. He teamed with second baseman Lou Whitaker for nearly all of those years, making the duo the longest-running double-play combo in baseball history.

Alan, a native of San Diego, attended Kearny High School and played American Legion Baseball. He was drafted by the Tigers in the second round of the 1976 MLB draft. A friend of JDRF San Diego Board members Chris & Lorraine Stiehl, he supported JDRF by hosting several Meet & Greets for kids with T1D and their families at Petco Park prior to Padres games. He graciously spent time with the JDRF community, autographing baseball cards for the kids and telling stories from his major league career which included being named the 1984 World Series MVP. In his 30+ year association with JDRF, Alan has attended many events and met with numerous JDRF kids and families in Detroit and Phoenix as well as San Diego.

After finishing his playing career, Alan went on to manage and coach at the major league level including managing the Tiger from 2003 -2005 and the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2014. His Hall of Fame career included six All-Star appearances, winning the Comeback Player of the Year Award in 1983, being named to the Sporting News AL Silver Slugger Team in 1987, 1988 and 1990 and holding the record with teammate Lou Whitaker for turning more double plays than any other shortstop – second baseman duo in the long history of professional baseball. He was inducted to the San Diego Hall of Champions in 1998 and is currently a special assistant to Tiger’s General Manager Al Avila.
