Introducing Ryan Tomi, First-time Rider at the 2018 Ride to Cure Diabetes in Amelia Island

When were you first diagnosed?

When I was 16 in 1997.

Why are you riding?

I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 1997 when I was 16 years old. My friend and fellow rider Kailey Lancello roped me into this after learning I was a diabetic too. I want to beat this disease so I don’t have to worry about the day-to-day consequences of T1D.

How did you learn about the JDRF?

I’ve known about the JDRF for as long as I’ve been diabetic, but I just learned about the Race for a Cure this year.

How did you get into cycling?

I was big into endurance sports since I was a kid, and have always wanted to do an Iron Man. I eventually had a knee injury so I focused on cycling more after that than I did running.

What is your advice for riders looking to join the Race for a Cure next year?

We’re considering making a team with our regional club in the future. Clubs will help you train and prepare for a long ride.
