JDRF’s High Point One Walk® Sets Fundraising and Participant Records

With Corporate Chair Dean Sink of Mickey Truck Bodies leading the way, nearly 900 people took part in the event, which raised over $215,000

Greensboro, North Carolina, May 10, 2017 – JDRF’s Piedmont Triad Chapter announced today that the High Point One Walk®, held April 29, raised over $215,000 to cure, prevent, and treat type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Nearly 900 people of all ages joined Corporate Chair Dean Sink, President and CEO of Mickey Truck Bodies, in the 5K Walk. Sink helped to secure corporate sponsorships in excess of $80,000—nearly tripling sponsorship levels from previous years. “This event showcased the tremendous compassion and strong sense of unity on the part of the High Point business community,” Sink said.

Before and after the Walk, the plaza at Bank of North Carolina at 801 North Elm Street reverberated with music, laughter, and cheers from family teams, corporate teams, and individual walkers, who enjoyed visiting with sponsors as they ate breakfast and lunch.

The world’s largest T1D event, JDRF One Walk brings together more than 900,000 people at 205 Walks around the U.S. to raise money for T1D research. One Walk raises more than $63 million annually through the combined efforts of more than 20,500 family and school teams and 5,300 corporate teams.

Along with the One Walk in High Point each spring, the Piedmont Triad Chapter of JDRF hosts One Walks in Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Alamance County in the fall. Together, the four Triad events deliver more than $1 million annually for T1D research.

About Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that impacts millions of people around the world. The disease occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, a hormone essential to turning food into energy. Without insulin, glucose from food stays in the blood, where it can cause serious damage to all of the body’s organ systems. It requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on injected insulin. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure.

About JDRF: JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research, and has committed over $2 billion to research since its founding in 1970. JDRF and its supporters share the vision of “a world without type 1 diabetes,” and work every day to support the organization’s mission of “accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat type 1 diabetes and its complications.” JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners and is the only organization with the scientific resources, regulatory influence, and a working plan to bring life-changing therapies from the lab to the community. As the largest charitable supporter of T1D research, JDRF is currently sponsoring $568 million in charitable research in 18 countries—including 50 active clinical trials. jdrf.org
