Greensboro, North Carolina, March 15, 2019 – To help individuals and families living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) navigate the medical, social, physical, and psychological challenges of the disease, the Piedmont Triad Chapter of JDRF and Novant Health are hosting a TypeOneNation Summit at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem from 8:30 am – 2 pm on Saturday, March 23, 2019. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The TypeOneNation Summit is a national initiative of JDRF, one that builds on the Family Retreat concept pioneered by the Piedmont Triad Chapter 10 years ago. Families and individuals—of all ages and at all stages of their T1D journeys—will come together to make connections and to participate in educational and inspirational sessions about life with diabetes:

  • The keynote sessions and some breakout sessions will be of general interest to those living with diabetes;
  • Other breakout sessions will be geared specifically to teens or adults living with T1D or to parents of children with T1D;
  • Children ages 4 to 12 will spend the day in a special Kids Camp coordinated by Diabetes Family Connection; and
  • All attendees will be able to learn about the latest in diabetes treatments and technologies at a Health & Wellness Fair.

The Summit will begin with a keynote address by JDRF’s National Director of Mission Dr. Nicole Johnson. Nicole, who was diagnosed with T1D at the age of 19, is a longtime diabetes advocate and leader who brought national attention to T1D when she shared her personal story and wore her insulin pump during the 1999 Miss America pageant, which she won. As a journalist, Nicole won a Telly Award for her work on the CNBC diabetes talk show dLife. She has also written eight books related to diabetes; at the Summit, Nicole will sign copies of her two most recent books, What to Do When Your Partner Has Diabetes: A Survival Guide, and Young Adult Type 1 Diabetes Realities. Nicole will also lead a breakout session on “Diabetes Distress and Resilience.”

Over lunch, Carl Armato, CEO of Novant Health, will share his insights into overcoming diabetes, a topic he knows very well: After being diagnosed with T1D at the age of 18 months, Carl and his parents were told repeatedly that Carl “could not” do things—play sports, become an accountant, live a long and healthy life—because his diabetes would get in the way. Of course, Carl refused to listen, and never let diabetes define him. After his Summit keynote address, Carl will sign copies of his latest book, A Future with Hope: An Inspiring Guide to Overcoming Diabetes.

Breakout sessions include:

  • Ask Us Anything: A T1D Panel of Parents, Athletes, and People with T1D
  • Parent Talk: Diabetes and Teenagers, led by Spenser Beasley, FNP, Cone Health
  • Transitioning from Pediatric to Adult Endocrinology Care, led by Kellie Faulk, MD, Novant Health
  • A Pharmacist’s Perspective on Diabetes Care and Daily Glucose Trends, led by Christina H. Sherrill, PharmD, High Point University Fred Wilson School of Pharmacy
  • Diabetes Distress and Resilience, led by Nicole Johnson, DrPH, JDRF
  • T1D in School, led by Jennifer Scheibly, RN, Guilford County Schools
  • Managing Diabetes: Building a Foundation for Success, led by Cindy Dillard, RD, LDN, CDE, Novant Health
  • Diabetes Survival Skills and Self Care, led by Justin Reece, RN, and David Clayton, RN, CDE, Novant Health
  • Mental Health Impact of T1D in Kids, Teens, and Adolescents, led by Matthew Hough, DO, Wake Forest Baptist Health
  • Exercise and Diabetes, led by Hannah Parker, BS, NSCA-CPT, Wake Forest University
  • Technology Talk 101, led by Paige Johnson, RN, BSN, Wake Forest Baptist Health
  • T1D Advocacy and Insulin Pricing, led by Frances Wheeler, JDRF Piedmont Triad Advocacy Chair, and Jeannette Figueroa, Benefits Specialist

At the end of the Summit, JDRF will present awards to local peer-to-peer fundraisers who participated in the Chapter’s 2018 One Walks, Ride to Cure Diabetes team, and Triad Running Team.

About Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic, life-threatening autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults at any age. Its onset is sudden and is not related to diet or lifestyle. In T1D, the body’s immune system destroys cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, meaning the body produces little to no insulin to regulate blood sugar and get energy from food. T1D requires rigorous 24/7 monitoring of blood glucose levels—even overnight—to avoid potentially lethal highs and lows in blood sugar, as well as other devastating complications like kidney, eye and nerve diseases.

About JDRF: JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Our mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat T1D and its complications. To accomplish this, JDRF has invested more than $2 billion in research funding since our inception. Founded by a group of parents of children with T1D in 1970, JDRF is an organization built on a grassroots model of people connecting in their local communities, collaborating regionally for efficiency and broader fundraising impact, and uniting on a national stage to pool resources, passion, and energy. We collaborate with academic institutions, policymakers, and corporate and industry partners to develop and deliver a pipeline of innovative therapies to people living with T1D. Our staff and volunteers throughout the United States and our six international affiliates are dedicated to advocacy, community engagement, and our vision of a world without T1D.
