Jackie Le Grand, JDRF’s Manager of Health Policy, to Address Piedmont Triad Chapter’s Annual Meeting at 7 pm on May 23 at the Proximity Hotel in Greensboro

Members of the public may RSVP by May 21 to attend this interactive session on JDRF’s efforts to reduce the price patients pay for life-saving insulin

Greensboro, North Carolina, May 17, 2019 – The Piedmont Triad Chapter of JDRF will host its Annual Meeting at 7 pm on Thursday, May 23, at the Proximity Hotel, 704 Green Valley Road, Greensboro.

The ever-increasing cost of insulin, which people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) must inject daily in order to survive, will be the focus of the keynote presentation by Jackie Le Grand, JDRF’s Manager of Grassroots Advocacy, who will travel to the Triad from Washington, D.C., to lead an interactive discussion with JDRF supporters, the public, and the media on the history of insulin pricing, which has more than doubled—and in some cases almost tripled—since 2012, and on JDRF’s efforts to make insulin more affordable.

Le Grand has focused on improving insurance coverage for people with chronic conditions since her own diagnosis with T1D in 2007. Her remarks on May 23 will address JDRF’s efforts to decrease insulin costs by passing on pharmaceutical rebates to patients and, ultimately, abolishing the rebate system. This work is a key element of JDRF’s overarching Coverage2Control campaign, which calls on health insurance companies to provide three things to help people with T1D:

  • Affordability: Make out-of-pocket insulin costs as well as costs for other diabetes supplies predictable and reasonable;

  • Choice: Give people the freedom to choose the insulin pump that’s right for them; and

  • Coverage: Cover all life-saving technology, including the artificial pancreas.

About Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that occurs when a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, the hormone that controls blood-sugar levels. T1D develops when the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells are mistakenly destroyed by the body’s immune system. The cause of this attack is still being researched; however, scientists believe the cause may have genetic and environmental components. T1D affects children and adults, and people can be diagnosed at any age. As of now, there is nothing anyone can do to prevent T1D, and there is no cure.

About JDRF: JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Our mission is to improve lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat T1D and its complications. To accomplish this, JDRF has invested more than $2 billion in research funding since our inception. We are an organization built on a grassroots model of people connecting in their local communities, collaborating regionally for efficiency and broader fundraising impact, and uniting on a national stage to pool resources, passion, and energy. We collaborate with academic institutions, policymakers, and corporate and industry partners to develop and deliver a pipeline of innovative therapies to people living with T1D. Our staff and volunteers throughout the United States and our six international affiliates are dedicated to advocacy, community engagement, and our vision of a world without T1D.
