Boisture’s 4-year-old daughter, Louise, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at the age of 3

 

Greensboro, North Carolina, October 22, 2019 – JDRF’s Piedmont Triad Chapter announced today that John Boisture, Chief Financial Officer of Flow Automotive Companies, will serve as Corporate Chair of JDRF’s 2019 Winston-Salem One Walk. Boisture, a father of three young children, is happily championing this year’s Walk theme: Dr. Seuss on the Loose.

 

“My family and I moved to Winston-Salem in June of 2018, when I joined Flow,” said Boisture. “Just as we were learning about our new community, our middle child, Louise, who was 3 at the time, began losing weight and exhibiting an unquenchable thirst. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) just over a year ago. And our lives changed dramatically.

 

“Fortunately, JDRF supporters and staff here in the Triad rallied around us immediately, supporting my wife Lisa and me as we navigated Weezie’s—and our entire family’s—‘new normal,’” Boisture continued. “We began to immerse ourselves in learning about T1D and the research JDRF is funding to find cures and improve the lives of everyone who is affected by this disease.”

 

With Walk Day less than a month away, Boisture is delighted with the response he’s seen to date from sponsors, corporate teams, and family teams. “Based on John and his family’s personal story and passion, the Winston-Salem Walk is on track to raise over $325,000 for T1D research,” said Eleanor Schaffner-Mosh, Executive Director of JDRF’s Piedmont Triad Chapter. “We invite the entire community to join us at BB&T Field on Saturday, November 16. Not only will participants learn about the ways JDRF is bringing our vision of a world without T1D to reality, but we’ll also have so much fun! Our Walk teams are busily creating their own colorful Dr. Seuss-themed t-shirts and costumes to underscore the fact that Walk Day is a celebration of all the people who live, and thrive, with T1D. We’re walking together—and raising money together—to turn Type One into Type None.”

 

The JDRF Winston-Salem One Walk will take place on Saturday, November 16, 2019, at BB&T Field. Check-in begins at 9 am, with the program starting at 9:30 am, and the 3-mile Walk getting underway at 10 am.

Each year, JDRF One Walks bring together more than 900,000 people across the country to change the future for everyone living with type 1 diabetes in a fun, family–friendly atmosphere.

 

In addition to the Winston-Salem Walk on November 16, JDRF’s Piedmont Triad Chapter will host a One Walk in Greensboro on November 2, in Alamance County on March 28, 2020, and in High Point on May 2, 2020. Together, the four Triad events will deliver approximately $1 million for T1D research.

About Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that occurs when a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, the hormone that controls blood-sugar levels. T1D develops when the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells are mistakenly destroyed by the body’s immune system.
