JDRF “Chapter Champion” Vulcan Materials Hosts 7th Annual Golf Tournament to Support Diabetes Research

In 2018, Vulcan’s golf tournament and Winston-Salem One Walk team combined to raise over $63,000 to fund type 1 diabetes (T1D) research

Greensboro, North Carolina, May 8, 2019 – Vulcan Materials Company’s Mideast Division, which received JDRF’s Piedmont Triad “Chapter Champion” Award in May 2018, is holding its 7th annual golf tournament to benefit JDRF on May 9, 2019, at the Olde Mill Golf Club in Laurel Fork, Virginia.

In 2018, Vulcan raised $63,055 for type 1 diabetes (T1D) research—most of it through the golf tournament, with the balance coming from Vulcan’s Winston-Salem One Walk team. The total represented a 24% increase over 2017. Vulcan staff made the check presentation to JDRF 2018 Winston-Salem One Walk Chair Yasser Youssef of The Budd Group at the Winston-Salem Walk on October 27, 2018.

“I am extremely proud to work for Vulcan Materials Company because of the value placed on our employees and the communities where we live, work, and play,” said Denise Hallett, Vulcan’s Manager of Community and Government Relations in North Carolina.  “The company invests its resources by encouraging employees to volunteer their time for organizations like JDRF.”

Martin Thorpe, president of the Mideast Division, noted, “We are extremely pleased by the support of our employees, customers, and friends for such a worthy cause. Finding a cure and supporting individuals with type 1 diabetes and their families is important to our employees and the health of the communities we serve. We are also appreciative of our 2019 Golf Tournament Diamond Sponsors: Carolina Cat, Carter Machinery, James River Equipment, and Metso. These generous companies are partnering with Vulcan to support JDRF.”

Vulcan’s support for JDRF began seven years ago and was inspired by a Vulcan employee who was diagnosed with T1D as a child. “Over the years, we have seen Vulcan’s passion and support for JDRF and our vision of a world without T1D grow exponentially—and that has translated into incredible financial support for T1D research,” said Eleanor Schaffner-Mosh, Executive Director of JDRF’s Piedmont Triad Chapter. “We are just so thrilled to have Vulcan partnering with us in this fight against type 1 diabetes.”

About Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that occurs when a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, the hormone that controls blood-sugar levels. T1D develops when the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells are mistakenly destroyed by the body’s immune system. The cause of this attack is still being researched; however, scientists believe the cause may have genetic and environmental components. T1D affects children and adults, and people can be diagnosed at any age. As of now, there is nothing anyone can do to prevent T1D, and there is no cure.

About JDRF: JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Our mission is to improve lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat T1D and its complications. To accomplish this, JDRF has invested more than $2 billion in research funding since our inception. We are an organization built on a grassroots model of people connecting in their local communities, collaborating regionally for efficiency and broader fundraising impact, and uniting on a national stage to pool resources, passion, and energy. We collaborate with academic institutions, policymakers, and corporate and industry partners to develop and deliver a pipeline of innovative therapies to people living with T1D. Our staff and volunteers throughout the United States and our six international affiliates are dedicated to advocacy, community engagement, and our vision of a world without T1D.
