We are thrilled to announce that the JDRF One Walks in Pittsburgh, Westmoreland, and Harrisburg will have virtual and in-person options this year! The walks will be celebrated Your Way! While it’s not the traditional walk experience of the past, it’s still an opportunity to enjoy an amazing day with your friends and family, all in celebration of your great work towards the mission. Please carefully review the details and FAQs below.
How does the JDRF One Walk – Your Way! compare to past Walks?
This year, we have two options for celebrating your success as a team and our strength as a community. You can enjoy the JDRF One Walk… your way! All the fun takes place on Sunday, October 3rd.
Option 1: Take a walk at the zoo: Join us for JDRF Day the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium (Pittsburgh & Westmoreland Sites) or at ZooAmerica (Harrisburg) on October 3rd. Walk teams will have the opportunity to earn admission tickets through fundraising, which can be used on October 3rd. You can also purchase discounted tickets or use a season pass. To comply with safety protocols and COVID restrictions, we will not have any official JDRF ceremony or gathering inside the park. Instructions to purchase tickets will be available soon.
Option 2: Walk anywhere, anytime, your way! Create a walk route in your neighborhood, challenge yourself with a long hike, or walk inside on your treadmill – however you choose to walk, October 3rd will be a day for our community to celebrate our stories, recognize our accomplishments, and walk to change the future for everyone living with T1D. JDRF will be celebrating with you on Facebook and Instagram, and sharing stories throughout the day. More details to come.
REGISTER: Walk registration opens this Wednesday, April 7th at walk.jdrf.org. Fry Communications is a longtime supporter of JDRF and they are excited to support our local families by kickstarting your walk fundraising! Fry Communications will be donating $100 to the first 50 teams to register in Western & Central PA. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity!
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What can I expect at the Zoo on October 3rd?
JDRF Day on October 3rd is an opportunity for our T1D community to come together and enjoy a day at the zoo together. It will be a typical trip to the zoo, except you’ll be there with your fellow JDRF One Walk teams. Please note that the zoo will also be open to the regular public. JDRF will not have any formal ceremony or gathering inside the park. We encourage all JDRF walkers to wear team t-shirts, JDRF t-shirts, or blue.
How do I earn Zoo tickets?
Tickets will be earned on an individual basis versus team basis. Every individual who raises $1,000 will earn two (2) complimentary tickets. You will have the option to donate any unused tickets back to JDRF.
How do I purchase Zoo tickets?
We will release more information on how to purchase tickets soon. Stay tuned.
Can I buy tickets at the door on October 3rd?
Yes, you can purchase regular priced zoo tickets at the door, as long as the zoo is already not at capacity. However, the JDRF discounted rate will not be available at the door. You will need to purchase JDRF discounted tickets ahead of time. More information on how to purchase discounted tickets will be available soon.
Will any proceeds from zoo tickets benefit JDRF?
No, purchasing discounted tickets will not benefit JDRF. So, if you have a season pass or are a member of the zoo, please use it to enter the park on October 3rd. We don’t want to give the impression that purchasing tickets benefits JDRF.
Is there a certain time I should come to the Zoo on October 3rd?
No. We want you to come when it is convenient for you. It will be your responsibility to communicate with members of your team or other JDRF friends to coordinate a time to meet at the park.
Can I turn in donations at the Zoo on October 3rd?
No, JDRF will not be collecting donations at the zoo on October 3rd. There will not be a formal JDRF gathering inside the zoo. If you have checks, you can mail them to the JDRF office at 501 Martindale Street, Suite 670, Pittsburgh, PA 15212. Please include a note with your team name. If you have cash, we suggest you convert it to a check and mail it to the office. If you are unable to convert to a check, please contact JDRF at email@example.com to schedule a cash drop off.
Will there be separate JDRF Zoo Days for the Pittsburgh & Westmoreland Walks?
Due to COVID-19 and a significant reduction in resources in 2021 – the Pittsburgh and Westmoreland walk will be celebrated at a joint JDRF Day at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium or celebrated Your Way around your neighborhood on October 3rd. This does not mean that these walks will certainly be on a combined day in the future.
Why is it important for me to participate in the JDRF One Walk?
The fundraising goal that we set for our Walk is directly tied to JDRF’s need for research dollars to prevent, treat and cure type 1 diabetes. JDRF relies on revenue from our events to ensure the continuation and progression of critical research that will one day lead to a cure for the T1D community. Until that day, it is crucial that we continue to push forward to reach these goals, even if our Walk is virtual, so that we can fund the many promising research studies which will change the lives of millions of families. With your help, we can continue our fight for a world without T1D—more than ever—with greater urgency, dedication, and commitment
How do I fundraise during a pandemic?
JDRF One Walk has always been, and still is, a day to celebrate and recognize our T1D community and their ability to help impact life changing research by fundraising. Many of you have requested sample language to use in your fundraising efforts and we have compiled lots of those samples. For messages that you can use to share via email, text, social media, and beyond – email Carling at firstname.lastname@example.org.
What if I receive donations after October 3rd?
You can absolutely continue to fundraise and receive more donations after Walk Day! You can mail checks to the JDRF office and they will be credited toward your team and toward the National Walk incentives.
Can I participate if I did not fundraise?
Yes. However, the walk is one of JDRF Western & Central PA’s largest fundraisers and is a fully donor driven walk (no registration fee). The money raised goes to help fund the best and most cutting-edge research to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes. We encourage every walker to donate or solicit a donation to support T1D research. No donation is too small and every dollar raised will make a difference.
