Daniel O. Phelan, Esq.

Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Type 1 Action Foundation | Director of the Center for Diabetes Rights, Eisenberg & Baum, LLP

Daniel is the founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Type 1 Action Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the empowerment and education of communities, families and individuals facing Type 1 Diabetes.

Through the Type 1 Action Foundation, Daniel keynotes conferences and galas all over the world speaking about his personal experiences having T1D, including growing up with T1D and playing college and professional baseball with T1D, all in an effort to empower people with T1D everywhere so that they know that anything is achievable with the disease.

Daniel also speaks to bring awareness to, and promote the rights of people with T1D. Through Type 1 Action, Daniel also has developed and provides free, downloadable forms such as a 504 Plan template, a Diabetes Medical Management Plan template for parents of students with T1D, and a packet to present to an employer that explains the rights of people with T1D in the workplace and requests reasonable workplace accommodations.

Daniel is also the Director of the Center for Diabetes Rights at Eisenberg & Baum, LLP. With an extensive roster of favorable outcomes in his matters throughout his law career, Daniel has dedicated his craft and experience to protecting the rights of those suffering from T1D. Daniel is the recipient of the prestigious Dr. Max Reich Award for Excellence in Civil Trial Advocacy, a prestigious award only awarded to one person per year. Prior to joining Eisenberg & Baum, Daniel was the Managing Partner of Phelan Law, PLLC, a law firm that serviced nearly exclusively individuals with T1D who were facing legal issues related to their T1D.

Daniel is also a member of the board of directors of the NYC/Long Island Chapter of JDRF, and the former President of JDRF Long Island’s Young Leadership Committee.

Megan Robinson

MS, RD, CDE, LDN, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

Megan Robinson is a clinical dietitian and certified diabetes educator at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia who cares for children with diabetes, Turner syndrome, and endocrine disorders. She received her Bachelors of Science in Dietetics at the University of Vermont and Masters of Science in Exercise Physiology at West Chester University.

Megan is a prolific writer for Philly.com; has been published in numerous nutrition journals; and, has presented at local and national conferences on sports nutrition and diabetes. She is a Board Certified Specialist Sports Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator, specializing in sports nutrition, cardiovascular health, and diabetes education. She is part of the Medical Team and Nutrition Team at the local Diabetes Training Camp for teens and adults.

Megan has been a competitive track and cross-country runner since high school and has competed in numerous long distance races, multiple marathons, including the Boston Marathon. She coaches distance runners and triathletes of all levels and her expertise in sports nutrition, diabetes, and running makes her an exceptional counselor for both aspiring and accomplished athletes with diabetes.

Shara Bialo, MD

Pediatric Endocrinologist, Nemours/A.I.DuPont Hospital for Children

Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age nine, Dr. Shara is a Pediatric Endocrinologist at Nemours/A.I.DuPont Hospital for Children. She trained and worked as a pediatric endocrinologist at Brown University in Rhode Island prior to moving to New Jersey to join the new Nemours Deptford and Cherry Hill locations. She primarily treats patients and teaches doctors-in-training, but she has also been involved in research to lessen the physical and psychological complications of diabetes in children. She draws on her experience as both a patient and a physician to help others navigate life with diabetes, among other endocrine disorders.

Brian Grant

JDRF Board Member

Technology Coordinator and Certified Diabetes Educator, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

Brian has been active in the field of diabetes since his diagnosis with type 1 diabetes in 2004, when he was 15 years old.  It was his diagnosis that lead him to the career path of being a Registered Nurse. Shortly after graduating with his nursing degree and RN license, he actively started looking to work in diabetes.

After serving in several clinical roles within Animas Corporation and Dexcom, he now serves as the Technology Coordinator and Certified Diabetes Educator at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.  He is also very active within Children with Diabetes Friends for Life Conferences.

Alan L. Yatvin, Esq.

Managing Partner, Popper & Yatvin

Alan L. Yatvin is a Managing Partner of the Philadelphia law firm of Popper & Yatvin where he concentrates his practice on police misconduct and civil rights litigation, criminal defense in state, federal and international courts, and representation of students with special needs and their parents, focusing on the rights and needs of those living with diabetes.

Alan was a member of the National Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) from 2015 to 2017. He was National Chair of Legal Advocacy for the ADA from 2010 to 2013. He championed the ADA’s Safe at School Campaign, as well as advocated for and celebrated the passage of the Pennsylvania School Diabetes Care Law, which ensures students with diabetes receive appropriate care at school and can safely participate in all school-sponsored activities.

Alan is a recipient of the 2007 American Diabetes Association Volunteer Leadership Professional Award for his work in the Rosen v. City of Philadelphia Class Action, a case involving the failure of police to provide needed care to people with diabetes in police custody. The settlement of that case, and Alan's subsequent work in the area, has led to nationwide materials for educating law enforcement officers about diabetes.

Alan graduated in 1983 with a Juris Doctor from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School in New York City. In March 1999, Alan was named one of Philadelphia’s Best Lawyers by Philadelphia Magazine. He has been selected as a Pennsylvania SuperLawyer every year from 2004 through 2018.

The Eastern PA Chapter of JDRF is honored and excited that Alan will lead a breakout session where he will discuss the ADA’s Safe at School Campaign, the Pennsylvania School Diabetes Care Law, and other topics which will prepare parents for informed discussions with school administrators.

Mark Bowerman

JDRF Eastern PA Advocacy Chair

Mark Bowerman has two direct connections to type 1 diabetes; his wife of 23 years, Hilary Bonta, has had T1D for nearly 30 years and his 16-year-old son, Lucas, has been had T1D since age nine. Both originally from Baltimore County, Mark and Hilary moved to Philadelphia more than 20 years ago and have resided in West Philadelphia for most of that time.

Together with Lucas and their younger son (non-T1D) Colin, Mark and Hilary like to travel, read, make and eat good food, and explore history and culture. Professionally, Mark works for PricewaterhouseCoopers leading internal projects. Most of his career has been with professional/consulting services firms, including KPMG, BearingPoint and Grant Thornton. He is in his fourth year serving as Advocacy Chair for JDRF Eastern Pennsylvania.

Marc Alan Vengrove, DO, FACP

Chief, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network | Medical Director, Helwig Diabetes Center

Dr. Marc Vengrove is the chief of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network, as well as the medical director at the Helwig Diabetes Center. He is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has been involved with JDRF since its founding.
