This incredible crew pictured above, make up the Sugar Stompers hike team. The team is led by Patricia & Dwight Maples who raise funds in honor of their granddaughter, Gracie. Gracie was diagnosed with T1D at age four and recently turned nine. The 2017 event marks the 3rd year their family has participated and we are excited to have them back! Itā€™s challenging to capture the commitment and passion this family embodies in a few words, but we hope that you will be hiking alongside them this April to see for yourself. Learn more about their motivation to continue their efforts below.

You have participated in the JDRF Challenge Hike for 2 years. What was your original motivation to sign up?
We signed up because we have always fought for causes we believe in and when Gracie and Dwight were diagnosed with T1D, we shifted our focus to raise funds for JDRF and the valuable T1D research. We have also been hikers for years and loved combining two of our passions.

What, in your opinion, is so special about the JDRF Challenge Hike event weekend?
The hike event weekend is truly one of the highlights of our year. We look forward to meeting other families and building connections in the T1D community. Any way you slice it, this weekend is a win!

How much have you raised for the JDRF Challenge Hike over the past two years?
We have raised over $17,000 in 2 years! We exceeded $10,000 last year and set our sights on beating that goal this year. One of our favorite ways to fundraise is through lemonade stands. Gracie has been raising funds for causes since she was 2 years old through lemonade stands and now her friends join her to help raise awareness and have fun!
