Diabetes Training Camp

Dr. Matthew Corcoran is the founder and president of Diabetes Training Camp Foundation, a unique clinical resource entirely devoted to diabetes wellness, fitness, and sports. Dr. Corcoran also owns his own consulting company and has counseled amateur, collegiate, and elite athletes with diabetes.

Dr. Corcoran is board-certified in Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism and is a certified diabetes educator, as well as an exercise specialist through the American College of Sports Medicine. Currently, he is serving as Medical Director of Atlanticare Endocrinology in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. Dr. Corcoran earned his undergraduate degree from Boston College and his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine before moving to the University of Chicago hospital and completing his internship and residency in internal medicine, and fellowship in Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Matt and is wife Jody, and their sons Brennan & Finn, currently call Margate City, New Jersey home and love spending time together being active outdoors, or visiting with their family and friends.

Joseph Henske, MD

DuPage Medical Group

PEAK: Exercise and T1D

Joseph (Joe) Henske, MD, FACE, is a practicing clinical endocrinologist and the endocrine department chair at DuPage Medical Group, an independent physician-led multispecialty group of 700+ physicians located in suburban Chicago. A lifelong runner, he competed in NCAA Division III track and field and cross-country while completing his B.S. in Chemistry at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. After graduating from medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, he completed his internal medicine residency at Northwestern University in 2007 and endocrinology fellowship at Vanderbilt University in 2010 before moving back to Chicago.

He continues to actively train and compete in distance running events, including 10 Chicago Marathons. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 15 and has made helping his patients manage type 1 diabetes and exercise a major focus of his clinical practice. He enjoys supporting the JDRF as part of the PEAK program as well as fundraising to support ongoing research. Outside of work, he enjoys spending his free time with his wife and 5 young children.

Lori Laffel, MD, MPH

Joslin Diabetes Center

Dr. Laffel is Chief of the Pediatric, Adolescent and Young Adult Section at the Joslin Clinic, and a Senior Investigator and Co-Head of the Section on Clinical, Behavioral and Outcomes Research at the Joslin Diabetes Center, as well as a Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, USA.

Under Dr. Laffel’s leadership, the pediatric program at Joslin has quadrupled in size and is recognized worldwide as a major pediatric diabetes centre for clinical care and research. She has been the Principal Investigator and Program Director of Joslin’s National Institutes of Health-funded postdoctoral fellowship and early career development training grants for pediatric endocrinologists entering the field of diabetes research.

Dr. Laffel is actively involved with the American Diabetes Association (ADA), as a member of the Boston Leadership Board, a recent past member of the National Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association, the National Committee for Professional Practice Guidelines, chair on the ADA’s Working Group on Transitions in Car for Young Adults with Diabetes, and past chair of ADA’s Youth Strategies Committee. She also has been a member on the Clinical Advisory Committee for JDRF. She was the co-editor on the recently released ADA-JDRF Sourcebook on type 1 diabetes through the Life. Dr. Laffel is also a member of JDRF’s Research Advisory Committee.

Dr. Laffel is the recipient of the American Diabetes Association’s 2015 Outstanding Physician-Clinician Award, the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce 2016 Pinnacle Award, and the 2015 University of Miami School of Medicine Hall of Fame Honoree.

Remi Rabasa-Lhoret, MD, PhD

Montreal Diabetes Research Center

Remi Rabasa-Lhoret MD, PhD, is an endocrinologist, professor at the Nutrition Department of Faculty of Medicine Universite de Montreal (Quebec, Canada), he has been an FRQS Scholar for 12 years, he holds the J-A De Serve Research Chair since 2008, is an active clinician, directs the Diabetes Clinic, Metabolic Laboratory and a research platform at IRCM. He has published over 250 manuscripts and book chapters (H-index 53) and received multiple prizes including the Young Researcher Award from the CSEM in 2010 and the IMS-Brogan Publication Award in 2016. The main research areas of the group are:

• The development of an external artificial pancreas: This new technology allows an insulin pump to adjust to the level of glucose. It has the potential to revolutionize the treatment by improving glucose control while reducing the risk of hypoglycemic malaise and simplifying treatment.
• Cystic fibrosis related diabetes: Life expectancy of cystic fibrosis patients has significantly improved leading to the emergence of new complications, including diabetes. The team tries to understand what the predisposes patients to diabetes and to understand whether earlier treatment of diabetes would improve the weight and lung function of these patients.
• Obese patients without metabolic complications: His team established the existence of cardio metabolic complications. The most recent studies indicate an association between the occurrence of metabolic complications and the presence of pollutants.

Eric Tozer, Athlete and Diabetes Ambassador

Diabetes Sports Project

Eric Tozer is a diabetes athlete ambassador who inspires the community through sports and utilizes his athletic accomplishments, such as Running Across America and Ironman triathlons, as a platform to be a role model in the diabetes community.

Eric had always lived a very active and healthy lifestyle, and he wasn’t going to let his diabetes diagnosis control his life so he decided to take charge. Filled with desire to utilize his athletic talents to positively impact the sporting and diabetes community, in 2015 he co-founded Diabetes Sports Project; an organization built to inspire. Led by a group of world class athletes who thrive with diabetes, their stories, athletic accomplishments, and community outreach empower others to lice healthy, responsible, and active lives. Collectively, they have run across America (10-man T1D relay in 15 days), qualified for the Ironman World Championship, the Boston Marathon and the Triathlon World Championships, and much more! The DSP athlete ambassadors use their accomplishments as a platform to educate and inspire as they speak at diabetes camps, children’s hospitals, support groups, and industry events. Through sharing their personal stories and extensive knowledge-base of managing T1D and sports, they provide insight, guidance, education, and inspiration to those affected by diabetes.

Growing up playing sports and being captain of his college soccer team, Eric learned valuable lessons like commitment, discipline, determination, and positive attitude, which continue to help him with his daily diabetes management and pursue his dreams.
